Description
Behringer U-PHORIA UMC1820 USB Audio Interface
The Behringer U-PHORIA UMC1820 is a rackmount USB audio and MIDI interface built for recording several sources at once without moving to a large console. It provides 18 inputs and 20 outputs in total, combining eight analogue microphone inputs on the front and rear panel with coaxial S/PDIF and optical ADAT expansion, so a small studio can start with the built-in preamps and grow later by adding an external converter. Conversion runs at up to 24-bit and 96 kHz, and the unit streams all analogue, digital and MIDI signals to a computer simultaneously over USB 2.0. For bands, podcast panels, drum recording and location work where one or two inputs are not enough, the UMC1820 keeps the channel count high while staying in a single 1U rack space.
Key features
- 18-in, 20-out USB 2.0 audio and MIDI interface in a 19-inch, 1U rackmount chassis
- Eight Midas-designed microphone preamps with switchable 48 V phantom power
- 24-bit, 96 kHz conversion for detailed, high-resolution recording and playback
- Optical I/O supporting S/PDIF, ADAT and S/MUX formats up to 96 kHz, plus coaxial S/PDIF
- Zero-latency direct monitoring of all analogue inputs while recording
- Dual headphone outputs with individual level controls and Monitor A/B source selection
- Main outputs with Dim, Mute and dedicated main level control, plus MIDI In and Out
Eight Midas preamps for multitrack sessions
The eight microphone preamps are the core of the interface. Each input accepts microphones, line-level sources and instruments through combo connections, with gain set per channel from the front panel. Phantom power is available for condenser microphones, while the generous headroom and low-noise design suit dynamic microphones on drums, guitar amplifiers and spoken voice as well. Because all eight preamps can record at the same time, a full drum kit, a small ensemble or a multi-microphone podcast can be captured as separate tracks for later mixing, rather than being summed to stereo on the way in. Input and playback mix control with a stereo and mono switch makes it straightforward to balance what performers hear while they play.
Digital expansion with ADAT and S/PDIF
Beyond the analogue inputs, optical connections carry ADAT and S/PDIF signals, and Behringer notes the ADAT input can be paired with a unit such as the ADA8200 to expand the system to sixteen Midas-designed microphone preamps. S/MUX support keeps higher sample rates usable over optical links, although the number of digital channels available changes with sample rate, as it does on any ADAT system. Coaxial S/PDIF adds a further stereo path for compatible digital sources. Planning a session around the UMC1820 therefore means counting analogue and digital sources separately: eight microphones can be connected directly, and additional channels arrive through external hardware connected digitally.
Monitoring, headphones and control room functions
Two headphone outputs, each with its own level control, allow an engineer and a performer to listen at different volumes without a separate headphone amplifier for simple setups. Monitor A/B source selection supports DJ-style cueing, and the main output section includes Dim and Mute alongside a dedicated level control, which is useful when checking a mix at low volume or taking a call mid-session. Direct monitoring routes analogue inputs straight to the outputs with no computer latency, so singers and players hear themselves in time even when the recording software is running a large buffer for a heavy project.
Build, compatibility and everyday use
The metal chassis is described by Behringer as impact-resistant and built for rack use, with detachable rack brackets included in the 1U format. It connects to Mac and Windows computers and works with common recording software, with drivers and downloads provided by the manufacturer. In daily use the workflow is conventional: install the appropriate driver, select the UMC1820 in the recording application, set gains using the loudest expected passage, choose direct or software monitoring deliberately to avoid doubled audio, and make a short test recording before committing to a full take. For studios that have outgrown a two-channel interface but do not need a large-format console, the UMC1820 offers a practical balance of preamp count, digital expansion and straightforward monitoring.
