Description
Yamaha HS8 — 8-inch Powered Studio Monitors (Pair) with 120 W Bi-Amplified Power
The HS8 is the largest monitor in Yamaha’s HS series, supplied here as a stereo pair. The HS design philosophy goes back to the NS-10M that sat on mixing consoles for decades: a monitor should tell you the truth about your mix, not flatter it. Each HS8 pairs an 8-inch cone woofer with a 1-inch dome tweeter, each driven by its own dedicated amplifier — 75 watts for the woofer, 45 watts for the tweeter — producing a flat, uncoloured response from 38 Hz to 30 kHz that shows you exactly what is in your recording. Specifications are per speaker.
Key features
- 2-way bi-amplified nearfield monitor: 8-inch cone woofer, 1-inch dome tweeter
- 120 W total per speaker (75 W LF + 45 W HF), crossover at 2 kHz
- Frequency response of 38 Hz to 30 kHz (-10 dB) covers the low end most work needs, no subwoofer required
- ROOM CONTROL and HIGH TRIM switches correct for speaker placement and room brightness
- Balanced XLR and balanced TRS phone inputs; unbalanced signals accepted too
- Low-resonance MDF bass-reflex cabinet with the signature white woofer cone
Why a flat monitor makes better mixes
A speaker that boosts bass or treble makes everything played through it sound impressive — including a bad mix, which then falls apart on earphones, in a car, or on a club system. The HS8 is deliberately neutral, so the decisions you make at the desk translate. If the vocal sits right and the low end is controlled on a pair of HS8s, it will hold up almost anywhere. That honesty is why the HS series, like the NS-10M before it, became a fixture in both project and professional studios.
Bi-amplified power and driver design
Bi-amplification gives the woofer and tweeter separate amplifiers matched to each driver’s job, instead of one amplifier feeding a passive crossover that splits the difference. The 8-inch woofer reaches down to 38 Hz, deep enough to judge kick drums and bass lines accurately without a subwoofer in most rooms, while the 1-inch dome tweeter carries detail up to 30 kHz. Yamaha’s transducer and magnetic circuit design is built for smooth response and low distortion at working levels, and the ported MDF enclosure is made to stay quiet — no rattles or cabinet colouration joining your mix.
Room Control and High Trim: set them up once
Monitors placed close to a wall or in a corner pick up extra bass, and a reflective room can sound bright. ROOM CONTROL counters the first problem with 0, -2 or -4 dB of cut below 500 Hz; HIGH TRIM adjusts the top end by 2 dB in either direction. Set both after positioning the pair — tweeters at ear height, forming an equilateral triangle with your seat — and the LEVEL control’s centre click gives you a repeatable reference volume on each speaker.
For music production, mixing and editing where the low end matters, an HS8 pair is a straightforward, proven choice: connect them to your audio interface with balanced cables and you have a reference you can trust session after session.
