Inputs and preamps

Each of the two inputs uses a combination XLR and quarter-inch TRS socket, so an XLR microphone cable or a jack lead connects without adapters. The direct monitor switch routes the input signal straight to the outputs and headphones with zero latency, which is the mode to use while recording so the performer hears themselves without the delay of a round trip through the computer; switch it off for mixing, when only playback should be heard. Separate output and phones level controls mean monitor volume and headphone volume can be set independently for comfort.

Compatibility and use in the studio

The UMC202HD connects over USB 2.0 with a Type-B socket and draws its power from the computer, consuming a maximum of 2.5 watts, so there is no separate supply to plug in. On Mac it works with the built-in Core Audio support, while Windows uses Behringer’s downloadable driver for low-latency performance in a DAW. Supported sample rates span 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz, and there is no need to record at the maximum rate: choose the rate that suits the project, with 48 kHz a sensible default for video work and 44.1 kHz for music releases. A Kensington security slot is a thoughtful addition for shared spaces and classrooms. At 170 mm wide and about 0.54 kg, the metal-cased UMC202HD survives being moved between rooms and bags in a way plastic interfaces do not, and it remains one of the most direct routes to clean two-channel recording for singers, guitarists, podcasters and voice artists starting a studio.
