RØDE Phone Cage

The RØDE Phone Cage is a magnetic mobile filmmaking cage that turns a smartphone into a proper camera rig. Instead of clamping the phone in a spring grip, it holds a MagSafe iPhone, or any smartphone in a MagSafe-compatible case, on a powerful magnetic mounting disc. The phone snaps on securely, can be repositioned between portrait and landscape, and comes off again in seconds when the shoot is over. Around that mount, the aluminium frame provides the mounting points a serious mobile setup needs: microphones, lights, handles, arms and tripods, all attached to one rigid cage.

The mounting count is generous. Five cold shoe slots take microphones and LED lights directly, and 33 threaded mounting points cover the frame, including 1/4-inch threads, 3/8-inch threads and ARRI locating-pin threads for accessories that must not twist under load. Four built-in cable management slots, one towards each corner, keep microphone and charging cables routed neatly in either orientation, so a working rig stays tidy instead of trailing leads across the shot.

Building a mobile rig

A typical interview setup takes shape quickly: a RØDE wireless or shotgun microphone on a top cold shoe, a small LED panel beside it, a handle on one side thread and the whole cage on a tripod through a base thread. Because the phone itself is magnetic, swapping between handheld B-roll and a locked-off tripod shot does not mean rebuilding the rig. Creators shooting vertical video for reels and shorts rotate the phone on its mount while the accessories stay put. The cage also improves handheld footage on its own: two hands on a rigid frame are steadier than fingers on a bare phone, and the added width gives natural leverage for slow pans.

Compatibility and limits

The magnetic mount needs a MagSafe iPhone or a phone in a MagSafe-compatible magnetic case or with a magnetic accessory attached; a bare non-magnetic Android phone will not hold on the disc, so check your phone and case before planning a rig around it. The Phone Cage is an accessory frame only: it includes no microphone, light, handle or tripod, and it provides no power or audio connection of its own. Microphones connect to the phone exactly as they would without the cage, with the cable slots simply keeping those leads under control.

Who it suits

The Phone Cage suits journalists, vloggers, wedding and event shooters, teachers and social-media creators who film seriously on a phone and have outgrown holding it bare-handed. It is equally at home on a desk for streaming and video calls, mounted on a tripod with a microphone and light attached. At 245 mm long it is a deliberate piece of kit rather than a pocket accessory, and that is the point: it gives a phone the stability, mounting capacity and working method of a small camera rig while keeping the phone workflow you already know.
