How the Y cables work in the field

LiveU’s own guidance for the Y cables is specific and worth following. Each connected modem shows up separately in the connection list, both on the unit and in the Solo portal, with its own bit rate, and each can be enabled or disabled individually. Two practical notes come with that control. First, enabling or disabling one modem briefly resets and reconnects the other modem sharing its cable, so changes are best made before going live rather than during a broadcast. Second, with LiveU’s LU Net modems, both modems should be plugged into the Y cable first, and the cable then connected to the unit — or the unit booted with the cable already attached — rather than hot-plugging modems into a cable that is already live.

Who needs four modems

Two modems cover many streaming jobs. Four earns its place where the network is the risk: crowded event venues where thousands of phones compete for the same cells, moving productions that cross coverage boundaries, remote locations served weakly by any single carrier, and broadcasts that cannot be repeated if the stream fails. Running modems on different carriers adds diversity as well as bandwidth, because two networks rarely degrade in the same place at the same time. Compatibility and what else is required

The Y cables are made for the Solo Pro’s USB modem ports; they are not a generic USB hub or splitter for computers, and they do not add modem support to the earlier Solo models. The rest of the chain is unchanged: compatible USB modems, SIMs or data plans for them, and LiveU’s LRT bonding service where your modem and data arrangement requires it.
