Description
AKG C414 XLS Multipattern Condenser Microphone: The Neutral C414
The AKG C414 XLS is the reference version of one of the most recorded microphones in studio history. It is a one-inch, large-diaphragm condenser with nine selectable polar patterns, three bass-cut filters and three pre-attenuation pads, voiced for a neutral, honest response rather than a hyped top end. That makes the XLS the C414 to choose for classical and ensemble recording, drum overheads, acoustic instruments and any source you want captured as it actually sounds. It is a different model from the C414 XLII, which carries a presence lift aimed at lead vocals; the XLS keeps its response essentially flat, so decisions about brightness are made at mixdown, not baked into every take.
Key features
- Nine selectable polar patterns, from omnidirectional to figure-8
- Neutral, linear voicing for accurate, mix-ready recordings
- Very low 6 dB-A self-noise and 88 dB signal-to-noise ratio
- Handles up to 158 dB SPL with pre-attenuation engaged
- Three bass-cut filters for proximity and rumble control
- Peak hold LED and lock mode for live and installed use
- Designed, engineered and built in Vienna, Austria
Nine patterns, one microphone
The pattern control steps through omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure-8, plus four intermediate settings between them. Those in-between positions are more useful than they first appear: they let you fine-tune how much room the microphone hears and how strong the proximity effect is, without moving the stand. Figure-8 opens up mid-side and Blumlein stereo work and rejects sound from the sides almost completely, which is valuable for recording a singer and guitar together. Omni captures a good room honestly for ensembles and orchestral spots. A single pair of C414 XLS microphones can cover stereo techniques that would otherwise need several different microphones.
Headroom, pads and filters
With no pad engaged, the XLS handles 140 dB SPL at 0.5 percent distortion; the switchable -6, -12 and -18 dB pre-attenuation pads raise that ceiling to 158 dB, enough for close-miked drums, brass and guitar cabinets. The three bass-cut filters roll off low frequencies at 40 Hz and 80 Hz with a 12 dB per octave slope, and at 160 Hz with a gentler 6 dB per octave, taming stage rumble, handling noise and the bass build-up you get when working close to a source. A peak hold LED warns of even the shortest overload peaks, so clipping is caught at the microphone rather than discovered in the edit.
Quiet, neutral and consistent
An equivalent noise level of just 6 dB-A puts the XLS among the quietest studio condensers available, which matters for quiet acoustic instruments, spoken word and classical material recorded at a distance. Sensitivity is 23 mV/Pa across a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range, and the transformerless output stage keeps the signal path short. Every control can be disabled in lock mode, protecting settings during live sound work and permanent installations. The double-mesh grille protects the capsule against moisture and plosives, and the all-metal body is built for daily professional use.
Setup and applications
Connect the C414 XLS with a balanced XLR cable to any microphone input supplying 48V phantom power; current consumption is about 4 mA, and AKG recommends a load impedance of 2,200 ohms or higher. It is supplied with a spider-type shock mount and a carrying case. In practice the XLS earns its place on drum overheads, piano, string and wind ensembles, acoustic guitar, room miking and broadcast voice work, as well as lead vocals where a natural rather than flattered sound is the goal. Try pattern and distance changes before reaching for EQ: on this microphone, most of the sound is available at the placement stage.
The C414 XLS is not a specialist or a character piece. It is a single microphone that can credibly record almost anything in a studio, with the neutrality and low noise to hold up as your rooms, preamps and expectations improve around it.
