AKG K712 PRO Open-Back Reference Headphones

AKG K712 PRO

The AKG K712 PRO is an open-back reference headphone for mixing, mastering and critical listening in a quiet room. It builds on AKG’s long-running studio line with a patented two-layer diaphragm, flat-wire voice coil and a fit system designed for hours of wear. Where closed headphones isolate, the K712 PRO does the opposite: it trades isolation for a wide, natural stereo image that makes placement, reverb and balance decisions easier to hear.

Key features

• Open-back, circumaural reference design
• Frequency response of 10 Hz to 39,800 Hz
• 62 ohm impedance with 105 dB SPL/V sensitivity
• Patented two-layer diaphragm and flat-wire voice coil
• Detachable mini-XLR cables: straight and coiled 3 m
• Self-adjusting leather headband and velour ear pads
• Lightweight 235 g build for long sessions

An image you can mix on

Open earcups let air and sound move freely, which removes the sealed-in pressure of closed designs and opens up the stereo field. Instruments sit in a space rather than across a line between your ears, so panning choices, stereo reverbs and the edges of a mix become easier to judge. AKG adds a carefully controlled low-end lift of about 3 dB compared with flatter siblings in the range, giving bass enough presence to assess without turning the headphone into a bass-heavy listen.

Driver design

The two-layer diaphragm varies its behaviour across its surface: the centre and edge zones are tuned to work together for cleaner piston-like motion and better transient response. A flat-wire voice coil lowers moving mass and improves efficiency, which is part of why the K712 PRO reaches 105 dB SPL per volt despite being a reference design. Maximum input power is 200 mW, so it pairs safely with interface headphone outputs and dedicated amplifiers alike.

Comfort over hours

At 235 g without cable, the K712 PRO is light for a full-size reference headphone. The genuine leather headband floats on AKG’s self-adjusting suspension, so there are no ratchet settings to dial in, and the large velour pads spread contact around the ear instead of pressing on it. The pads are replaceable, and both supplied cables — a straight 3 m lead and a coiled 3 m lead — detach at a locking mini-XLR socket, ending in a 3.5 mm plug with a screw-on 6.35 mm adapter.

Where it belongs

Open-back means sound leaks in both directions: the room reaches you, and your mix reaches the room. The K712 PRO is therefore a desk tool for quiet studios and home listening rooms, not a tracking headphone for use beside a live microphone or on a train. Used in the right setting, it rewards you with an honest, spacious presentation of familiar recordings.

If your priority is judging a mix or hearing music with space and detail intact, and your listening happens in a quiet room, the K712 PRO remains one of the reference points in its class.
