Description
Apogee HypeMiC USB Microphone
The Apogee HypeMiC is a USB condenser microphone with something no ordinary USB microphone has: a studio-quality analogue compressor built into the microphone itself, working on the signal before it is converted to digital. Most USB microphones simply capture whatever level arrives and leave the rest to software. The HypeMiC adds Apogee’s PureDIGITAL conversion at up to 24-bit/96 kHz, a cardioid condenser capsule, a microphone preamp with up to 46 dB of gain, and a headphone output with a Blend control for zero-latency monitoring. It is aimed at podcasters, streamers, voice artists and musicians who record into a phone, tablet or computer and want the take to sound finished as it goes down.
Key features
- Built-in three-stage analogue compressor, applied before conversion
- PureDIGITAL connection for up to 24-bit/96 kHz recording
- Cardioid condenser capsule, focused on the voice in front of it
- Maximum SPL of 130 dB — handles loud voices and instruments
- Headphone output with Blend control for zero-latency monitoring
- Works with iOS, Mac and Windows; no configuration required
- Accessory kit included: tripod, pop filter, stand adapter and carry case
What the analogue compression does
Voices are uneven. A speaker leans in, laughs, emphasises a word, and the level jumps; two seconds later they are mumbling at half the volume. A compressor evens that out in real time, restraining the peaks so the average level can sit higher and the quiet words stay audible. Because the HypeMiC’s compressor is analogue and sits before the analogue-to-digital converter, it also protects the recording itself: peaks are tamed before they can clip the converter, rather than being cleaned up afterwards. Three compression settings let the user choose how much control to apply, from gentle levelling for a natural interview sound to a firmer setting for the upfront, broadcast-style voice used in streaming and narration. It is not a substitute for good microphone position, but it is the feature that makes recordings from this microphone sound produced rather than raw.
Capsule, preamp and conversion
The cardioid pattern picks up sound mainly from the front and rejects the room behind the microphone, the right behaviour for a desk in an untreated space. The microphone handles up to 130 dB SPL, so it will not distort on a shouted line or a close acoustic instrument. Sensitivity is -36 dBfs at 94 dB SPL, noise level is -108 dBfs (A-weighted) at 0 dB gain, and the preamp offers up to 46 dB of gain, enough for quiet speakers without strain. Conversion runs at up to 24-bit/96 kHz through Apogee’s PureDIGITAL path, the same grade of conversion the company builds into its audio interfaces. Apogee does not publish a frequency response figure for the HypeMiC; the specification set concentrates on the conversion and preamp figures listed here.
Monitoring and connections
A headphone output on the microphone provides direct monitoring, and the Blend control mixes between the live microphone signal and the playback from the computer or phone — essential for recording over music, interviewing remotely or checking how a take sits against a backing track, all without the delay of software monitoring. The microphone itself connects by Micro-USB, and the box includes cables for Lightning, USB-C and USB-A hosts, covering iPhones and iPads, modern laptops and older machines alike. Power comes from the host device over the same cable. It measures 124 x 38 x 38 mm and weighs 0.20 kg.
Ready to record anywhere
The included desktop tripod, microphone stand adapter, pop filter and carry case mean the microphone can be set up on a desk, mounted on a stand or packed for location recording without buying accessories first. There are no drivers or configuration steps for standard use: plug in, select HypeMiC in the recording app, set the gain, choose a compression setting and record a short test.
For creators who record voice on a phone or laptop and want it to arrive sounding controlled, present and finished, the HypeMiC’s analogue compression and Apogee conversion make it a clear step above an ordinary USB microphone.
