The Audio-Technica AT2040 is an end-address dynamic microphone built for close speech: podcasting, streaming, voice-over and broadcast-style recording where the voice has to stay in front and the room has to stay out. It is an XLR-only microphone with a hypercardioid pattern, a large-diaphragm dynamic element voiced for a warm, assertive broadcast character, and the pop filtering and shock isolation built into the body rather than added as accessories. Note that the AT2040 is a separate model from the AT2040USB: this version has no USB output or headphone jack and connects to an interface or mixer like any studio dynamic.

A voice-first response

The AT2040’s 80 to 16,000 Hz response is shaped around speech rather than extended for its own sake. The low end supports the natural weight of a voice worked close to the microphone, while the top end stops where speech stops, which keeps room tone, computer fans and harsh sibilance from becoming part of the recording. Open circuit sensitivity is -53 dB (2.2 mV), typical of a broadcast dynamic, so pair it with an interface or mixer preamp that offers healthy gain and the voice arrives full and present.

Hypercardioid isolation

Hypercardioid is the tightest of the common microphone patterns, rejecting more sound from the sides and rear than a cardioid. In a home studio that means less keyboard, less room reflection and less of a second speaker bleeding into the channel; in a multi-microphone podcast it means cleaner separation between hosts. The trade-off is discipline: the pattern has a small rear lobe, so keep the microphone aimed at the mouth and avoid placing a monitor speaker directly behind it.

Pop filtering and shock mount, built in

Close speech produces plosives, and the AT2040 deals with them internally. Its multistage windscreen combines a non-woven filter with foam mesh behind the grille to break up blasts of air before they reach the element, allowing close-up use without an external pop filter in the way. An integrated shock mount isolates the capsule from the vibration that travels through boom arms and stands when a desk is bumped or a keyboard is typed on, keeping those thumps out of the recording.

Setup and handling

The metal body is 145.3 mm long with a 52 mm maximum diameter and weighs 615 g, a solid, broadcast-style heft that suits boom arms and desk stands. The supplied AT8487 clamp pivots for positioning and fits standard stands via the included 5/8 inch-27 to 3/8 inch-16 adapter, and a soft pouch is included for storage. Impedance is 600 ohms, matching standard microphone inputs, and as a dynamic microphone it needs no phantom power.
