Description
Neumann TLM 102 Studio Set (Nickel) – Compact Large-Diaphragm Condenser with EA 4 Shock Mount
The Neumann TLM 102 Studio Set pairs Neumann’s compact large-diaphragm condenser microphone with the EA 4 elastic shock mount, in the classic nickel finish. The plain TLM 102 is supplied with a basic stand mount; the Studio Set’s EA 4 suspension cradles the microphone elastically, isolating it from stand-borne rumble, floor vibration and handling knocks before they reach the recording. The microphone itself is the smallest in Neumann’s studio range at 116 mm long, built around a large-diaphragm cardioid capsule.
The capsule’s voicing explains the TLM 102’s reputation on vocals and speech. The frequency response is extremely linear up to 6 kHz, keeping voices and instruments natural and the bass range clearly defined, with a gentle presence boost above 6 kHz that helps a vocal sit forward in a mix without added equalisation. An integrated pop screen inside the grille tames plosives on close speech, and the capsule itself is elastically suspended inside the body as a second layer of protection against structure-borne noise. Fast transient response preserves the attack of acoustic guitar, percussion and piano.
Key features
- EA 4 elastic shock mount included, the Studio Set difference
- Large-diaphragm cardioid condenser capsule
- Maximum SPL of 144 dB for loud sources without distortion
- Low self-noise of 12 dB-A and 132 dB dynamic range
- Gentle presence boost above 6 kHz for vocal clarity
- Transformerless circuitry and integrated pop screen
Headroom for loud sources, quiet floor for soft ones
Few compact condensers cover as wide a working range. A maximum sound pressure level of 144 dB at 0.5 percent distortion means the TLM 102 can stand in front of a guitar amplifier, a kick drum or a brass section and stay clean, while a dynamic range of 132 dB and an A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio of 82 dB keep the noise floor out of intimate material. Sensitivity is 11 mV/Pa at 1 kHz, high enough that modest interface preamps reach healthy recording levels without being pushed into their noisiest range. The uniform cardioid pattern rejects sound from the rear, helping untreated rooms by reducing what the microphone hears from behind it.
Transformerless design and everyday handling
The TLM designation stands for transformerless microphone: an electronic output stage replaces the traditional transformer, giving strong common-mode rejection and protection against RF interference, with rated impedance of 50 ohms into a 1 kohm load. The microphone runs on standard 48V phantom power, drawing 3.5 mA, and connects by a three-pin XLR. At 52 mm in diameter and about 210 g, it is light on a boom arm and unobtrusive on camera, a real consideration for podcasters, streamers and broadcast work where the microphone shares the frame with the speaker.
Working with the Studio Set
Mount the EA 4 on the stand, seat the microphone in the suspension, enable phantom power and start with the capsule at mouth height, slightly off axis for close vocals.
For a first serious studio microphone, or a compact addition to an established locker, the TLM 102 Studio Set delivers the essential Neumann behaviour, controlled lows, present vocals, enormous headroom, in the most manageable body the company makes, with the shock mount that completes it already in the box.
