The ATEM Mini Extreme is the largest model in Blackmagic Design’s original ATEM Mini range, built for productions that have outgrown four cameras. It accepts eight HDMI sources, from cameras and games consoles to computers presenting slides, and switches between them from a proper broadcast-style control panel with source buttons, transition controls and dedicated record and stream keys. This is the original Mini Extreme, not the later ISO G2 generation, and it records the finished programme rather than isolated recordings of every input.

Everything a small live production needs is inside the one compact unit: a built-in streaming engine, programme recording to USB media, a Fairlight audio mixer, chroma keyers for virtual sets, a SuperSource multi-box processor and a 16-way multiview output. For churches, schools, event producers, podcast studios and corporate webcasts, it replaces a rack of separate switcher, encoder, recorder and graphics hardware with a single box that one operator can run.

Switching and effects

The Extreme provides four upstream keyers, two downstream keyers and a total of nine layers, so titles, logos and lower thirds can sit over keyed and switched sources without external graphics hardware. Two independent DVEs handle picture-in-picture moves with borders and drop shadows, while SuperSource adds four more DVE layers over a background, which is how multi-guest interview layouts and split-screen discussions are built. Five pattern generators and two colour generators are built in, transitions include mix, dip, wipe and DVE moves, and the internal media pool stores 20 RGBA stills for titles and logos, with two media players for playing them out live.

Streaming, recording and webcam output

The hardware streaming engine sends RTMP directly to platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitch over Ethernet, or through a tethered phone when a venue connection is unavailable. Programme output can be recorded at the same time to a USB drive formatted as ExFAT or HFS+, producing an H.264 file that is ready to upload. Two USB-C ports also provide a webcam output, so the switched programme appears as an ordinary webcam to conferencing and streaming software on a connected computer. Note that this non-ISO model records the programme feed only; separate per-input recordings belong to the ISO models.

Audio with Fairlight processing

The 11-input, 2-channel Fairlight mixer combines the embedded audio from all eight HDMI sources with two 3.5mm stereo microphone inputs, which provide plug-in power for lapel and desktop microphones. Every channel offers gain control, level and peak metering, six bands of parametric EQ, and dynamics processing with a compressor, gate and limiter, plus a master gain control. Analogue input delay of up to eight frames helps correct lip-sync when a camera path runs late, and a headphone output lets the operator monitor the mix directly.

Control and monitoring

Productions can be driven from the front panel alone or from ATEM Software Control on Mac or Windows, which exposes the full switcher, media pool, audio mixer and streaming setup, and several operators can connect over Ethernet at once. The multiview output is configurable to 4, 7, 10, 13 or 16 windows and can be routed to either HDMI output, keeping programme, preview, every camera, SuperSource, clean feed, media player and audio meters visible on one monitor. At 370mm wide and around 1.23kg, the unit travels easily between venues.

For any production that genuinely needs eight sources, broadcast keying and direct streaming without a separate encoder, the ATEM Mini Extreme remains a complete, self-contained live production desk in a remarkably small chassis.
