Why ALR matters more than the projector alone

An ultra-short-throw projector fires its image upwards at a steep angle from just below the screen. A plain white screen scatters that light in every direction and accepts room light from every direction too, which is why UST pictures on ordinary screens look washed out in daylight. An ALR surface is engineered with a microstructure that reflects light arriving from below – the projector – back towards the seating position, while absorbing or deflecting light arriving from above, such as ceiling lights and windows. Contrast, black levels and colour saturation all survive in a lit room, which is what turns a projector from a lights-off novelty into a genuine television replacement.
