Why two dual-cone drivers

A dual-cone driver carries a smaller secondary cone attached at the centre of the main cone. The main cone handles the low and middle frequencies that give speech its body, while the smaller cone extends the high-frequency response that carries consonants, and consonants are what make announcements intelligible at distance. Using two such drivers in one column raises output and coverage without a separate tweeter or a crossover network, which keeps the design simple and dependable for installations that may run all day, every day. The sealed enclosure supports this voicing: it keeps the response controlled and the cabinet compact, at the cost of the deepest bass, which a speech column does not need.

Matching an amplifier

The 16 ohm impedance is the figure to plan around. Ahuja’s own guidance is to use an amplifier rated at 50 W or more, and gives the example of two SRX-50DX speakers running from a 75 W Ahuja DPA-770. Two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel present an 8 ohm load, which is how multiple columns are normally added along a hall. What must not happen is connecting this DX model to a 100 V line output intended for tapped speakers such as the SRX-50XT; low-impedance and 100 V systems are wired differently. The cabinet provides two terminal strips in parallel, which makes linking onward to a second column straightforward. The listing includes a 2 m speaker cable to start the run.

Placement for even coverage

Mount the column so its drivers sit above head height and aim along the length of the seating rather than across it, and keep it well away from open microphones to avoid feedback. In long rooms, several columns at lower level generally give more even speech coverage than one column driven hard. Start with the amplifier level low, raise it gradually while listening from the furthest seat, and stop when announcements are clear at the back without sounding harsh at the front.
