Jbl Stage A135C

Jbl Stage A135C – Slim Centre Channel Speaker for Clear Dialogue

The JBL Stage A135C is the slim centre channel loudspeaker of the JBL Stage series, engineered at JBL’s acoustic facility in Northridge, California. The centre channel carries most of a film’s dialogue, so it decides whether a home theatre sounds clear or muddled. The A135C uses an unusual layout: six 3-inch polycellulose cone woofers with a single 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter, in a cabinet only about 105 mm tall that sits neatly below a television.

The tweeter uses JBL’s patented High Definition Imaging (HDI) waveguide geometry to spread high frequencies evenly across the seating area, so dialogue stays intelligible off-axis as well as in the centre seat. JBL rates the A135C with a frequency response of 75 Hz to 40 kHz, a sensitivity of 90 dB, a nominal impedance of 6 ohms and recommended amplifier power of 20 to 150 watts. A crossover at 2.5 kHz keeps the handover between the woofers and tweeter smooth through the vocal range.

Key features

• Two-way centre channel loudspeaker designed for dialogue clarity in movies and TV
• Six 3-inch (76 mm) polycellulose cone woofers for strong, even midrange output
• 1-inch (25 mm) aluminium dome tweeter with patented HDI waveguide
• Slim, low-profile cabinet, about 105 mm high, that fits below modern TVs
• Frequency response of 75 Hz to 40 kHz
• Sensitivity of 90 dB and 6-ohm impedance, easy for AV receivers to drive
• Recommended amplifier power of 20 to 150 watts
• Bass-reflex enclosure with side-firing tuned ports for extended low-frequency support
• 2.5 kHz crossover for smooth integration between woofers and tweeter
• Binding post terminals and a removable grille, with keyhole slots for wall mounting

Six small woofers, one clear voice

Using six small woofers instead of two large ones gives the A135C a wide combined radiating area while keeping the cabinet slim. Small drivers also stay controlled through the midrange, which is where voices live. The result is dialogue that remains precise and forward in the mix, even during busy scenes where effects and music compete for attention. The side-firing bass-reflex ports add low-frequency weight without enlarging the cabinet, so film soundtracks keep their body while the speaker stays discreet under the screen.

Placement and system matching

The A135C can sit on a shelf or cabinet below the screen, rest on its feet on a tabletop, or hang on the wall using its keyhole slots. Its wide, shallow shape suits modern media units where a tall, deep centre speaker will not fit. Tonally it is voiced to match the other JBL Stage loudspeakers, so pairing it with Stage floorstanding or bookshelf models at the front gives a seamless soundfield, with voices and effects moving across the front stage without changing character.

Driving it well

With 90 dB sensitivity and a 6-ohm load, the A135C does not demand an unusually powerful receiver; the recommended 20 to 150 watt range covers most AV receivers. Setting the centre level correctly in the receiver’s calibration, and crossing over to a subwoofer in the usual 80 Hz region, lets it concentrate on the range it reproduces best.

If dialogue clarity is the weak point of your current system, the Stage A135C is a focused fix: a slim, wide centre speaker that keeps voices clear and easy to follow at any volume.
