Amazon Echo Spot (Newest Model) Smart Alarm Clock with Alexa (Ocean Blue)

The newest Amazon Echo Spot is a smart alarm clock built around a 2.83-inch touchscreen and Alexa, designed to sit on a bedside table and do the jobs a phone alarm does badly: wake you gently, show the time and weather at a glance, play music and radio, and run your smart home by voice. The Ocean Blue finish wraps a compact half-sphere body that measures 113 x 103 x 111 mm and weighs 405 g, small enough for a nightstand or desk without crowding it.

The display uses a half-circle tinted cover glass and supports a range of customisable clock faces and colour themes, so the Spot can match the room instead of lighting it up. A built-in motion sensor brightens the screen as you approach, and at night the display dims with a clock face designed to be easy on the eyes. There is deliberately no camera, which makes it an easier fit for bedrooms than screen-based assistants that include one.

• Routines triggered by time, motion, voice or other smart home events
• Tap the top of the device to snooze an alarm
• No camera, plus a physical microphone off button for privacy
• Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth streaming from a phone

A better way to wake up

The Spot treats the alarm as a sequence rather than a shock. Wake-up routines can raise the display brightness gradually and bring in music, radio or a briefing at increasing volume, and a tap on the top of the unit snoozes without hunting for a button in the dark. Multiple alarms and timers are set by voice, and the screen shows what is coming next, so a 6 a.m. alarm never has to be a surprise.

Alexa and smart home control from the bedside

With Alexa on board, the Spot answers questions, reads the news and weather, manages lists and reminders, and controls compatible smart home devices. Support for Matter over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy Mesh means it works with a wide range of lights, plugs and switches, and Routines can chain actions together: one command can dim the lights, lock up and start a sleep playlist. The 1.73-inch speaker is sized for near-field listening, clear at bedside volumes for music, audiobooks and radio.

Where it fits

The Echo Spot suits bedrooms first of all, but the same mix of clock, speaker and voice control works on a work desk, in a kitchen where a camera is unwanted, or in a child’s room for alarms and bedtime routines. It needs only a power socket and Wi-Fi, and setup runs through the Alexa app on Android or iOS.
