The Bang & Olufsen Beosound Shape Acoustic Damper Tile is one of the component types that make up a Beosound Shape wall installation, and it has a specific job: it is a passive, sound-absorbing tile that improves the acoustics of the room the system plays in. It contains no speaker driver, no amplifier and no electronics, and it does not reproduce music by itself. Within a finished Shape wall, damper tiles sit alongside speaker tiles and amplifier tiles behind identical fabric covers, so the acoustic treatment is invisible as treatment: the wall simply looks like a single piece of textile art.

Beosound Shape is a modular system designed by Oivind Alexander Slaatto. Installations combine hexagonal tiles in a pattern planned for the room, and B&O places no limit on the number of damper tiles in a system, while speaker tiles can run to 44 and amplifier tiles to 11 in a single installation, covering rooms of roughly 20 to 100 square metres. Adding dampers is how a Shape design balances sound output against the reflections of a hard-walled space.

What a Damper Tile Does in a Room

Living spaces with plaster walls, glass and hard floors reflect sound back at the listener, and those reflections blur detail and make music feel harsh at higher volumes. A damper tile works the other way: its sound-absorbing filling takes energy out of those reflections. Placed within a Shape arrangement, dampers steady the room’s contribution to the sound, so the speaker tiles are heard more directly and conversations in the same room stay comfortable. Because dampers need no cabling, they are also the flexible element in a layout: they can fill out a pattern, extend a design across a wall, or be added later when a room’s furnishings change.

Damper, Speaker, Amplifier: Planning the Components

A complete Shape installation mixes three working tile types plus covers. Speaker tiles produce the sound, amplifier tiles power them, and damper tiles treat the room, with a streaming hub providing the source. A photograph of a finished wall may show several separately supplied components, so a layout should be planned tile by tile: decide what each position needs to do before fitting covers, confirm the supplied cover, rails and connectors for the intended arrangement, and keep access to the cabling behind powered tiles. Finish and Covers

Every tile wears a fabric cover, and the damper is finished to match the rest of the wall exactly. Standard cover colours include Black, Brazilian Clay, Infantry Green, Parisian Night Blue, Purple Heart and Wild Dove Grey, and the Kvadrat collaboration adds wool-blend fabrics in Brown, Moss Green, Pink and Dark Blue. The tile casing itself is a lightweight composite in black, hidden behind the cover once mounted.
