Amazon Echo Show 8 2nd Gen Black

Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) – The Smart Display That Earns Its Counter Space

The Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) pairs an 8-inch HD touchscreen with stereo sound and Alexa, in a size that fits a kitchen counter, a desk or a bedside table without dominating it. The headline upgrade over the first generation is the camera: a 13 MP sensor with automatic framing that pans and zooms digitally to keep you centred on video calls as you move around the room – genuinely useful when you are cooking, working or corralling children mid-call.

Everything else is the familiar Echo Show formula done well: ask Alexa for the news, weather and timers, stream shows and music, follow recipes step by step, control smart home devices by voice, and glance at your day on a display that adapts its colour to the light in the room.

• Stream video and music from popular services, and make Alexa-to-Alexa calls
• Smart home control for compatible lights, plugs, cameras and more
• Physical camera shutter and microphone/camera off button for privacy
• Dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, powered by an octa-core processor

Video calling that follows you

On a phone, a video call pins you to one spot. The Echo Show 8’s wide-angle 13 MP camera and auto-framing keep you in shot while you move – stirring a pan, fetching ingredients, pacing during a work call. Calls run through Alexa to other Echo Shows, the Alexa app and supported calling services, and the device doubles as a home intercom: drop in on another Echo in the house, or view compatible security cameras and video doorbells on the screen by asking.

The kitchen-and-desk hub

This size of smart display succeeds as a household utility screen. In the kitchen it is timers, conversions, recipes with steps you can advance by voice, and a radio or playlist with album art. At a desk it is calendar, reminders, news briefings and quick calls. In the bedroom it is a smart alarm clock with a sunrise-style wake-up and a photo frame when idle. The stereo speakers with a passive radiator are a clear step above smaller smart displays for music, podcasts and video soundtracks.

Privacy, handled physically

A smart display with a camera earns trust through hardware, not promises. The Echo Show 8 has a built-in shutter that slides over the lens and a button that disconnects the microphones and camera electronically. Voice recordings can be reviewed and deleted in the Alexa app, and routines and permissions are managed there too. Set it up once, place it where the household actually gathers, and it becomes part of the furniture in the best sense.

For anyone adding a first smart display – or upgrading the room where the family spends its time – the Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) in black is the balanced choice: big enough to watch, small enough to belong anywhere.
