The 606 S3 is the bigger of the two stand-mount speakers in the Bowers & Wilkins 600 Series S3 range, built around a 165mm Continuum bass/midrange driver in a cabinet sized for a dedicated stand or a sturdy shelf. This version wears the White cabinet finish with a grey grille. The S3 generation brought a new tweeter to the 600 Series, borrowed thinking from the ranges above it, and revised the terminals and internal details, while keeping the straightforward two-way format that has made the 606 line a default recommendation for serious stereo listening at this level.

As a passive design the 606 S3 needs a separate amplifier, with 30W to 120W into 8 ohms recommended. That openness is part of the appeal: the speakers can start with a modest integrated amplifier and keep improving as the electronics around them improve, and the same pair can move from front stereo duties into a 600 Series home cinema system built around the matching centre speaker and subwoofers.

Titanium Dome tweeter

The headline change for S3 is the tweeter. The previous aluminium dome gives way to a Decoupled Double Dome design in titanium, a stiffer material that pushes the dome’s first breakup behaviour higher and keeps high frequencies cleaner at level. The tweeter assembly is decoupled from the front baffle, reducing the vibration it picks up from the cabinet and from the bass driver working below it. In practice this shows up as treble that stays composed on dense recordings: cymbal harmonics, string overtones and the leading edge of voices keep their separation instead of hardening into glare when the volume rises.

Continuum cone midrange and bass

The 165mm bass/midrange driver uses the Continuum cone material developed for the company’s flagship ranges. Its woven composite construction avoids the abrupt changes in cone behaviour that can add character of their own, so voices and instruments come through with a neutral, open quality. The larger cone, compared with the 130mm unit in the smaller 607 S3, moves more air and gives the 606 S3 greater bass weight and dynamic headroom. Low frequencies extend to 40Hz at the -6dB point, with a measured response of 52Hz to 28kHz within 3dB, and the rear Flowport, with its dimpled surface, keeps port noise down; foam plugs are supplied to tune the bass when the speakers must sit close to a wall.

Cabinet, terminals and setup

Each cabinet measures 344mm high, 189mm wide and 300mm deep, or 328mm deep including grille and terminals, and weighs 7.05kg. The terminals follow the improved layout introduced on the 700 Series, giving a cleaner signal path and easier connection. Placed on rigid stands at seated ear height, with some free space behind the rear port, the pair images precisely and fills medium-sized rooms comfortably. Harmonic distortion stays below 1 percent from 100Hz to 22kHz, which underpins the speaker’s ability to stay clear at realistic listening levels.

Choose the 606 S3 if you want a stand-mount speaker that can anchor a stereo system without a subwoofer for most music, and that can later form the front channels of a surround system.
