The DALI SONIK 1 is the smallest model in DALI’s SONIK series, the range that carries technology developed for the flagship KORE loudspeaker down into compact, everyday cabinets. This pair is finished in Light Oak, a pale wood finish that suits bright, Scandinavian-influenced rooms. The SONIK 1 is a two-way bookshelf design built around two DALI technologies: a Clarity Cone woofer made from paper and wood fibre, and the SMC Essential magnet system, which uses DALI’s patented Soft Magnetic Compound to cut distortion in the driver’s motor. Together with an oversized 29 mm soft-dome tweeter, they give this small speaker a brief it shares with the whole series: natural, uncoloured voices and detail that survives at low listening levels.

Driver technology, explained plainly

The Clarity Cone takes its name from its purpose. Paper and wood fibre cones have a random fibre structure that spreads resonances out rather than concentrating them at one frequency, and DALI shapes the cone geometry so the handover to the tweeter at 2,800 Hz is smooth. Underneath, the SMC Essential system attacks a different problem: in a conventional iron motor system, the magnet’s behaviour changes slightly as the voice coil moves, which generates distortion. SMC is a granulated magnetic material with very low electrical conductivity, and placing it where the coil works keeps the motor more linear. The practical outcome is a midrange that stays clean when the music gets busy.

Where the SONIK 1 works best

This is a speaker for small to medium rooms, desks and secondary systems, and for surround duties in a SONIK-based home cinema where its wall bracket simplifies placement. On stands or a shelf it forms a compact stereo pair for nearfield and room listening; DALI recommends a distance of 1 to 50 cm from the rear wall, so it tolerates the furniture placements real rooms demand. Sensitivity is 86 dB and maximum output is 106 dB, which means it will play at satisfying levels in its intended spaces without asking for an unusually powerful amplifier.

Building a system around it

The SONIK 1 shares its tweeter, cone material and voicing with the rest of the SONIK range, so it combines cleanly with larger SONIK floorstanders at the front and the SONIK CINEMA centre where a system grows from stereo into surround. Bass extension to 51 Hz covers most music convincingly on its own; adding a subwoofer is a matter of taste and room size rather than necessity for everyday listening. Single-wire connections keep cabling simple, and the speakers are supplied as a matched pair.
