Definitive Technology SR9080 Surround Speaker

Definitive Technology SR-9080 – Bipolar Surrounds for Theatres That Want to Disappear

The SR-9080 is Definitive Technology’s larger bipolar surround speaker, sold as a single unit, built to voice-match the BP9000-series towers. Two complete driver arrays – each with a 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter and a 4.5-inch BDSS midrange driver – fire from opposite faces of the cabinet, so surround information arrives as a diffuse field rather than a point you can locate.

That is the bipolar argument: in a real cinema, surround sound comes from an array of speakers spread along the walls, and no single one draws attention to itself. The SR-9080 recreates that envelopment from one box per side, which is why Definitive’s theatres sound larger than the rooms they are in.

Bipolar versus direct-firing surrounds

A direct-firing bookshelf used as a surround points its output at the listener, which makes effects easy to localise – sometimes distractingly so, especially for seats close to the speaker. The SR-9080’s opposed arrays bounce much of their energy off the walls first, trading pinpoint localisation for a seamless bubble of ambience: rain falls around the room, crowds surround the seat, and flyovers swell rather than jump between boxes. For film-first systems, most listeners prefer the trade.

Placement guidance

Wall-mount the SR-9080 pair beside or slightly behind the main seating, at or above ear height, and let the bipolar radiation do the rest – the design is forgiving of imperfect rooms and asymmetric layouts. As the larger model in the range, it keeps up with BP9000 towers at reference levels in medium to large theatres where the smaller SR-9040 would strain.

Who the SR-9080 suits

Choose the SR-9080 for dedicated theatre rooms and large living-room cinemas built around Definitive Technology fronts, or any system whose surrounds are currently the weak, localisable link. Buy two for a 5.1 system, or four for 7.1 surround and surround-back duty.

System matching

The SR-9080’s voicing is tailored to the BP9000 family, so effects that travel from a BP tower through the centre to the surrounds keep one tonal signature – the helicopter stays the same helicopter. It also integrates gracefully with other brands’ fronts of similar character, but its natural home is the all-Definitive theatre. Drive it with a receiver channel of sensible power; the bipolar design is efficient enough that surround channels, which receivers often starve, are not a limitation here.

What you will need

Order two SR-9080 speakers for a standard 5.1 layout, or four for 7.1, plus wall fixings appropriate to your wall construction. Each unit needs only speaker cable from the receiver’s surround channels – no power, no line-level runs – which keeps installation simple even in finished rooms where cable paths are limited to skirting and coving.
