Edifier R1280DBS Bookshelf Speaker (Black)

Edifier R1280DBS Bookshelf Speakers

The Edifier R1280DBS in Black is a powered bookshelf speaker pair for desks, televisions and small rooms, with the amplifier built in so no separate receiver is needed. Total output is 42W RMS, delivered through a 4-inch woofer and a 13mm silk-dome tweeter in each cabinet. Connection choice is the strength of this model: Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless streaming, optical and coaxial digital inputs for a TV or player, and dual RCA analogue inputs for two wired sources at once. A subwoofer output, front-panel tone controls and a wireless remote make the pair easy to live with day to day.

Powered speakers, no amplifier required

A traditional hi-fi setup separates the jobs: speakers, amplifier and sources each need their own box and cables. The R1280DBS folds the amplifier into the speaker system, so the pair connects directly to your sources and plays. The 42W RMS output is sized for nearfield desk listening and small to medium rooms, where clarity at normal volumes matters more than sheer scale. Each speaker combines a 4-inch woofer for midrange and bass with a 13mm silk-dome tweeter for high frequencies. Silk domes are valued for a smooth treble character that stays listenable over long sessions, while the bass-reflex port helps the compact cabinets produce fuller low frequencies than their size suggests.

Digital, analogue and Bluetooth sources together

Few listening setups have only one source, and this speaker is built for a mix. The optical input suits a television, giving far clearer dialogue and fuller film sound than most built-in TV speakers, while the coaxial input serves a CD player, streamer or other digital source. Two RCA inputs run simultaneously, so a turntable with a suitable phono stage, a computer or a games console can stay connected without cable swapping. Bluetooth 5.0 covers the phone in your pocket for casual streaming. Switching between a TV programme, a record and a playlist becomes an input selection rather than a rewiring task.

Controls where you can reach them

The front of the main speaker carries bass, treble and volume controls, so the sound can be shaped from the listening position’s nearest point without opening an app. Bass and treble adjustment is genuinely useful on a desk, where a wall behind the speakers can thicken the low end, or in a room where a leaner balance reads more clearly. The included wireless remote handles volume and source changes from across the room, which matters when the speakers serve a television. The subwoofer output leaves a growth path open: add a powered subwoofer later and the system gains deeper bass for films while the speakers continue handling everything above it.

MDF cabinets in a Black finish

The enclosures are made from MDF, a dense material chosen for speaker cabinets because it resists the resonances that colour sound in thin plastic housings. That solidity supports the clean midrange the driver pair is capable of, particularly on voices, acoustic instruments and dialogue. In Black, the pair sits discreetly beside a monitor, under a television or on a bookshelf without drawing attention from the screen or the room. The compact bookshelf footprint means they fit where floorstanding speakers and component systems cannot, including student rooms, home offices and bedroom setups.

For anyone upgrading from laptop, monitor or television speakers, the R1280DBS in Black offers powered convenience, a full spread of digital and analogue inputs and Bluetooth streaming in one tidy pair.
