The JBL Stage 250B is the larger bookshelf model in JBL’s Stage 2 series, designed and engineered at JBL’s Acoustic Engineering Center of Excellence in Northridge, California. It is a 2-way design pairing a 5.25-inch (130 mm) polycellulose ribbed-cone woofer with a 1-inch (25 mm) anodised aluminium dome tweeter mounted in JBL’s next-generation patented HDI (High-Definition Imaging) waveguide. Frequency response is 50 Hz to 25 kHz (-6 dB; 55 Hz – 25 kHz at -3 dB), sensitivity is 86 dB (2.83V @ 1 m), and the crossover sits at 1.7 kHz.

The HDI waveguide geometry — derived from JBL’s professional designs — controls the tweeter’s directivity so the frequency response stays neutral both on and off axis, with reduced diffraction: listeners off to the side hear a tonally consistent sound, which matters when the 250B is used as a surround speaker as much as in a stereo pair. The rear-firing flared port reduces air velocity at the port exit, eliminating chuffing and colouration, and the ribbed polycellulose cone keeps the woofer stiff and light for JBL’s signature bass character.

Crossover and build details

JBL uses premium crossover components in the Stage 2 line: the high-frequency section uses air-core inductors and mylar capacitors to reduce distortion, while the low-frequency section uses laminate-core inductors and electrolytic capacitors rated to handle more power and transmit energy faster. Stage 2 detailing includes magnetically attached grilles, trim rings and a floating front baffle — touches unusual at this level. Anti-slip pads are included to seat the speakers securely on shelves or stands and minimise vibration.

Placement

The port fires from the rear, so give the speakers some clearance from the wall behind them (start around 20–30 cm). At 5.6 kg each and 321 mm tall, the 250B works on sturdy stands for stereo or on shelves and brackets as front, surround or height-adjacent channels in a Stage 2 home theatre.
