The KEF Q3 Meta is the larger bookshelf model in KEF’s Q Series Meta range, built around the 12th generation of KEF’s Uni-Q driver array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). By placing the tweeter in the acoustic centre of the midrange and bass cone, Uni-Q makes the whole speaker behave as a single point source, so the sound stays coherent and evenly dispersed wherever you sit in the room.

Inside the two-way bass reflex cabinet, a 25 mm (1 in.) vented aluminium dome tweeter with MAT works with a 165 mm (6.5 in.) aluminium cone midrange and bass driver. The result is a speaker that reaches from 49 Hz to 20 kHz (±3 dB), with an in-room bass response down to 39 Hz, and the clarity to handle everything from film scores to high-resolution streaming.

What Metamaterial Absorption Technology Does

MAT is a highly complex mazelike structure fitted behind the tweeter. Each channel of the maze absorbs a specific frequency, so the structure acts as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound that radiates from the rear of the tweeter. With that distortion removed, the high frequencies that remain are purer and more natural, which is why vocals and fine detail sound so unforced on the Q3 Meta.

Uni-Q: One Point Source for the Whole Room

In a conventional speaker the tweeter and woofer are separate sound sources, and the tonal balance changes as you move off the centre line. Uni-Q places the tweeter in the centre of the cone so the entire audio spectrum radiates from a single point. The practical benefit is a wide, stable soundstage: everyone on the sofa hears the same detailed, natural sound instead of one listener getting the sweet spot and the rest getting a compromise.

Where the Q3 Meta Fits

The Q3 Meta works as a main stereo pair in small to medium rooms, on stands or on a cabinet, and it is equally at home as the front left and right channels of a Q Series home theatre system, where it can pair with Q Series centre and subwoofer models. With 87 dB sensitivity and a 4 ohm nominal impedance, it partners well with a wide range of AV receivers and stereo amplifiers in the 15 W to 150 W range.
