Sonos One (Gen 2) Smart Speaker – Black

The Sonos One (Gen 2) is the compact smart speaker that anchors the Sonos multi-room system: a bookshelf-sized enclosure with a built-in voice assistant, full access to the Sonos streaming platform and sound quality that carries well beyond its footprint. It pairs a dedicated tweeter and mid-woofer with two Class-D amplifiers, so a single unit fills a bedroom, kitchen or study with clear, balanced playback, and two units can be paired for true stereo separation or used as rear surrounds with a Sonos soundbar.

Key features

• Built-in voice control with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
• Apple AirPlay 2 for direct streaming from Apple devices
• Two Class-D amplifiers driving a tweeter and a mid-woofer
• Trueplay tuning adapts output to the room’s acoustics
• Stereo pairing with a second Sonos One, or use as home theatre surrounds
• Humidity resistant — suited to bathrooms and steamy kitchens
• Capacitive touch controls for volume, track and microphone mute

Voice control built in

A far-field microphone array lets the Sonos One hear commands across the room, even while music is playing. Ask Alexa or Google Assistant to play a playlist, check the weather, set a timer or control compatible smart-home devices. A dedicated microphone light shows when the mic is active, and the touch control on top can mute it completely for privacy.

The Sonos system advantage

The One runs on the Sonos app, which brings together Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, radio and dozens of other services in one place. Speakers group and ungroup in seconds, so music can follow you from room to room. The Gen 2 revision adds Bluetooth Low Energy for easier setup, an updated processor and more memory for future features.

Small box, considered sound

At just over 16 cm tall, the One sits on a shelf or counter without dominating it, but the sealed enclosure and carefully matched drivers deliver bass weight that belies the size. Trueplay measures the room with your phone’s microphone and adjusts the EQ automatically, which matters in reflective kitchens and tiled bathrooms where small speakers often boom or thin out.

Room to grow

The One is deliberately a beginning rather than an end point. Add a second for stereo, move the pair to surround duty when a Sonos soundbar arrives, or scatter singles through the house and group them for whole-home playback — the system treats every configuration as normal. Sonos Radio adds free curated stations and global radio within the same app, and because the platform is software-led, features continue to arrive over updates rather than being frozen at the version in the box. Few speakers at this size offer that kind of lifespan.

Choose the Sonos One (Gen 2) if you want one speaker that starts a whole-home system: voice control, every major streaming service and a clear upgrade path to stereo pairs and surround setups, all in a humidity-resistant matte black cabinet.
