Adept Audio IC62 In-Ceiling Speaker

Adept Audio IC62 In-Ceiling Speaker

The Adept Audio IC62 is a 6.5 inch in-ceiling speaker for whole-home audio, designed to bring background and everyday listening to kitchens, bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms and living spaces without visible boxes or cables. Its polypropylene-cone woofer is stiff and light, giving clean, low-distortion midrange and more bass than most listeners expect from a ceiling speaker, while the 1 inch pivoting silk-dome tweeter can be aimed toward the listening area after installation. Adept tunes the IC62 to sound good throughout the room rather than only directly underneath it, which suits the way people actually move through a home. Power handling is 85 watts, sensitivity is a healthy 91 dB, and the 6 ohm impedance is compatible with standard AV receivers, multi-room amplifiers and 8 ohm rated distribution amplifiers. The speakers are supplied as a pair, finished by a paintable grille that disappears into the ceiling.

Sound in real rooms

Ceiling speakers live with hard floors, kitchen counters and long hallways, so even coverage matters more than a perfect sweet spot. The IC62’s voicing keeps music and speech intelligible at background levels and holds together when the volume rises for a gathering. The pivoting tweeter adds a useful correction: aim it toward a sofa, a dining table or a work surface and the high frequencies follow, instead of being absorbed by the spot directly below. For mono coverage in larger spaces, Adept’s guidance spaces speakers roughly 10 to 20 feet apart; for a stereo pair, keep each speaker at a similar distance from the main listening position, around 10 feet apart.

Installation

The cut-out diameter is 8 3/4 inches (222 mm), the grille measures 10 inches (254 mm) across, and the mounting depth is 3 3/4 inches (95 mm) per the manufacturer’s installation manual, so ceiling clearance should be confirmed before cutting. Adept’s Tool-Less Trim-Ring system installs by hand: the ring goes into the cut-out, the mounts are squeezed and twisted, and the speaker locks in without a screwdriver, a real advantage on a ladder or in a tight ceiling void. Push-connect terminals accept stripped speaker wire directly, and CL3-rated cable is recommended for in-ceiling runs. If painting the grille, use spray paint only, remove the backing cloth first and refit it afterwards.

Upgrading later

The IC62 is Adept’s entry ceiling model, and its cut-out and grille size match the step-up models in the range, so a room can start here and move to a higher-performance Adept ceiling speaker later using the same ceiling holes. Combined with its lifetime warranty, that makes the IC62 a low-risk way to put music through a home, one pair of rooms at a time.
