The Bowers & Wilkins CCM684 is a passive two-way in-ceiling loudspeaker from the CI 600 series, designed for rooms where the sound should be heard and the speakers should not be seen. An 8-inch woven glass fibre bass and midrange driver gives it more low-frequency authority than smaller ceiling speakers, and a pivoting soft dome tweeter with a three-position EQ switch lets the installer correct for the off-axis listening positions that ceiling mounting usually creates. It works as a stereo music speaker, a surround or height channel in a home theatre, or a distributed audio speaker across several rooms.

The 200mm woven glass fibre cone handles bass and midrange with the stiffness needed to keep vocals intelligible at ceiling distance, while the 25mm soft dome tweeter covers high frequencies up to 35kHz. Because listeners are rarely directly under a ceiling speaker, the tweeter housing pivots to aim treble toward the seating area, and the three-position EQ switch adjusts the treble balance for the angle chosen. Sensitivity of 88dB means modest amplifier power produces comfortable levels, and the 8 ohm nominal impedance, with a 4.5 ohm minimum, is an easy load for AV receivers and multi-room amplifiers.

Installation

The CCM684 needs a 250mm ceiling cut-out and 133mm of depth behind the surface; the frame measures 290mm across and protrudes just 4mm, so the visible footprint stays tidy. Bowers & Wilkins QuickDogs fasteners clamp the speaker into the ceiling quickly and evenly, and plug-and-play connections simplify wiring. The grille can be painted to match the ceiling finish. For new-build work, the optional C8 pre-mount kit frames the opening before the ceiling is closed, and the optional 6C back box is available where sound transfer to the room above or fire and acoustic control needs managing.

System Planning

The CCM684 is a passive speaker and needs an external amplifier and source; ceiling mounting adds no streaming or playback functions of its own. Plan positions around the seating, confirm the cavity depth clears 133mm plus cable space before cutting, and wire with consistent polarity. A single pair covers a typical living room or bedroom for music; larger or open-plan spaces are better served by two pairs on separate zones. In a home theatre, CCM684 speakers match well as surround and Dolby Atmos height channels alongside Bowers & Wilkins cabinet speakers.

For distributed audio, several CCM684 speakers can share a multi-room amplifier zone where the combined load stays within the amplifier’s rating, and their wide, even dispersion suits background music in kitchens, hallways and commercial spaces as well as focused listening rooms.
