Definitive Technology DI 6.5R In-Ceiling Speaker

The Definitive Technology DI 6.5R is a round in-ceiling speaker from the Disappearing Series, designed to deliver full-size speaker performance from a fitting that is almost invisible once installed. A 6.5-inch BDSS midrange driver and a pivoting 1-inch pure aluminium dome tweeter cover a frequency response of 26 Hz to 30 kHz, with 90 dB sensitivity and recommended amplification of 10 to 200 W per channel. The hidden-flange design and low-profile magnetic grille, which can be painted to match the ceiling, leave almost nothing to see. This listing is for a single speaker.

Key features

• 6.5-inch BDSS midrange driver for clarity and bass output
• 1-inch pivoting pure aluminium dome tweeter, aimable at the listeners
• Frequency response of 26 Hz to 30 kHz
• 90 dB sensitivity, easy to drive
• Recommended amplifier power of 10 to 200 W per channel
• Three-position environmental EQ switch
• Hidden flange with paintable magnetic grille
• Cutout of 7-1/4 inches and total depth of 3-5/8 inches

Disappearing by design

The DI Series premise is that a ceiling speaker should be heard and not seen. The DI 6.5R mounts flush with a hidden flange, and its micro-perforated grille sits almost flat against the ceiling, held by magnetic fasteners rather than visible fixings. The grille diameter is 8-5/16 inches, yet once painted to match the ceiling the speaker reads as little more than a subtle disc. For living rooms, kitchens and media rooms where visible boxes are not wanted, this matters as much as the sound: you can install pairs or full surround layouts without changing how the room looks.

Driver technology from the floorstanding range

The 6.5-inch driver uses Definitive’s Balanced Double Surround System, which supports the cone at two points to suppress unwanted resonance and allow longer excursion. In practice that means cleaner midrange and more bass output than a conventional ceiling driver of the same size, reflected in the unusually deep 26 Hz low-end figure. The pivoting aluminium dome tweeter can be aimed toward the listening area after installation, which sharpens imaging and dialogue intelligibility, a real advantage for Dolby Atmos height channels and surround positions where the speaker cannot always sit directly above the seats.

Tuning and installation

A three-position environmental EQ switch lets you tailor the response to the installation: ceiling and wall boundaries reinforce some frequencies, and the switch compensates so the speaker sounds balanced in place rather than just on a test bench. Installation needs a cutout diameter of 7-1/4 inches and a total depth of 3-5/8 inches, with the speaker itself weighing 3.8 lb. A pair of spring-loaded speaker inputs takes the cable from your AV receiver or multi-room amplifier, and the nominal 8 ohm impedance is compatible with amplifiers rated for 4 to 8 ohm outputs.

Where it works best

The DI 6.5R covers the three jobs ceiling speakers are actually bought for. As Atmos or surround height channels, the aimable tweeter and wide dynamics keep effects precise. As a stereo pair in a bedroom, kitchen or study, the full-range response plays music properly rather than as background filler. And in multi-room systems, the high sensitivity gets useful volume from modest amplifier power. Set the receiver crossover to small with a subwoofer handling the lowest octave in film systems, or run them full range for music zones.

Choose the DI 6.5R if you want real home-theatre and music performance with nothing visible in the room. It brings floorstanding-speaker thinking to the ceiling, and disappears once the grille is painted.
