The Elac IC-V61-W belongs to ELAC’s Vertex I architectural range, a 6.5-inch two-way speaker designed to be heard rather than seen. Despite the in-wall wording used in some listings, the IC prefix marks this as the round in-ceiling member of the Vertex family: a 236.5 mm circular baffle that drops into a 206 mm ceiling cutout, finished with a slim magnetic grille that sits almost flush with the ceiling surface. It is sold individually, so a system can be built in exactly the quantities a room needs, from a stereo pair to a full surround layout with height channels.

ELAC voiced the Vertex series for the two jobs architectural speakers actually do: front, surround and height channels in a hidden home theatre, and distributed music in rooms where a cabinet speaker would be in the way. A 6.5-inch polypropylene woofer and a 1-inch cloth dome tweeter, combined through a custom multi-element crossover built with audiograde components, aim for the smooth, even response that keeps dialogue intelligible and music free of the hard edge that ceiling placement can add.

Driver and crossover design

The Vertex I design is a two-way, rear-side-open speaker: the ceiling void acts as the enclosure, so driver control and crossover quality carry the performance. The crossover uses multiple elements and audiograde parts rather than a single capacitor, which smooths the transition through the 3,000 Hz handover and keeps vocals, the hardest test for a ceiling speaker, sounding natural from seats that are inevitably off the speaker’s axis.

Performance and system matching

Rated sensitivity is 89 dB at 2.83 V / 1 m with a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, and ELAC recommends amplifiers of 30 to 120 watts per channel, with nominal and peak power handling of 50 and 120 watts. Those figures place the IC-V61-W comfortably with mainstream AV receivers and multi-room amplifiers. In a theatre it timbre-matches the other Vertex I models, so in-wall and in-ceiling positions can be mixed in one system without the front stage and the overhead channels sounding like different speakers.

Installation notes

The speaker requires a circular cutout of 206 mm diameter and a mounting depth of 111 mm, with cutout template and manual included in the box. Plan positions clear of joists, ducting and light fittings, space pairs evenly for stereo coverage, and for Atmos height channels follow the usual guidance of placing them above and slightly ahead of the main seating. Once the speaker is seated and the clamps are firm, the magnetic grille simply clicks back into place, and it can be painted with the ceiling colour for a fully integrated finish.

Applications

Living rooms that need a 5.1 or Atmos system without visible speakers, kitchens and dining rooms running a music zone, and bedrooms where a discreet stereo pair replaces a soundbar are the typical briefs for this model.
