The ELAC Debut 2.0 C6.2 is the larger centre channel speaker in the Debut 2.0 range, built for the rooms and listening levels where the smaller C5.2 runs out of headroom. Two 6.5-inch woven aramid-fibre woofers flank a 1-inch cloth dome tweeter in a wide, internally braced cabinet, giving the centre channel the output and authority to match the F6.2 floorstanders or B6.2 bookshelves across the front of the system. Since the centre speaker reproduces the bulk of movie dialogue and much of the on-screen action, its capability sets the ceiling for the whole theatre’s clarity.

The C6.2 shares the Debut 2.0 driver technology and voicing, so dialogue pans and front-stage effects stay tonally seamless as they move between left, centre and right. ELAC tuned the design for sensitivity and an easy impedance load — 88 dB and 8 ohms nominal — so ordinary AV receivers can drive it to convincing film levels without strain, a deliberate choice for a speaker that often works harder than any other in the system.

Why the bigger centre matters

In a large room, seats sit further from the screen, and dialogue level must rise to stay intelligible over effects and music. A centre speaker reaches that level by moving its drivers harder — or, in the C6.2’s case, by having twice the woofer area so each driver works less. Lower excursion means lower distortion in the midrange, so whispered lines and shouted ones are reproduced with the same clarity. The dual-woofer horizontal layout with the tweeter at its centre also keeps vertical dispersion controlled, reducing the comb effects that can thin voices when listeners sit off to the sides.

Placement and setup

Place the C6.2 as close to the screen’s centreline and to seated ear height as furniture allows, angled slightly toward the listeners if it sits low. The front ports make it one of the few centres that tolerates placement inside an open equipment cabinet. Set the receiver’s centre channel to small with an 80 Hz crossover when a subwoofer is present, and match its level to the front speakers with the receiver’s test tones or auto-calibration.

System partners

The C6.2 is voiced for Debut 2.0 B6.2 and F6.2 front speakers, B5.2 or OW4.2 surrounds and the S10.2 subwoofer, and it holds its own alongside the larger F6.2 towers that would overwhelm a smaller centre.

For dedicated theatre rooms and large living spaces, the C6.2 puts the system’s budget where the soundtrack lives: in the dialogue.
