Deftech Cs 9040

Definitive Technology CS9040 – The Centre Channel That Keeps Dialogue Clear

The Definitive Technology CS9040 is a high-performance centre channel speaker, and the centre is where home theatre succeeds or fails: most dialogue and much of the on-screen action passes through it. The CS9040 combines a 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter, two 4.5-inch BDSS midrange drivers and an integrated 8-inch bass radiator in a rigid, resonance-free aluminium-accented cabinet, voiced to anchor the front stage of a BP9000-series system.

The result is vocal clarity with real weight behind it. Whispered lines stay intelligible at sensible volumes, while effects and music crossing the centre arrive with the body that smaller centre speakers thin out. Its response extends from 50 Hz to 40 kHz, with 89 dB sensitivity and an 8-ohm load that any capable AV receiver can drive.

BDSS and the bass radiator, explained

BDSS, Definitive Technology’s Balanced Double Surround System, supports the driver cone at two points, allowing greater excursion without losing control. A 4.5-inch BDSS driver therefore produces bass output more typical of a larger unit while keeping the dispersion and midrange clarity of a smaller one, which is exactly the trade a centre speaker needs. The passive 8-inch bass radiator extends that low end further without a port, so the CS9040 sounds full at the moderate crossover settings home theatres use, and dialogue never turns thin or nasal.

Placement and integration

Place the CS9040 directly above or below the screen, angled toward ear level at the main seat, with its front edge clear of the shelf so sound is not reflected off the surface in front of it. The cabinet’s inert construction and bracing keep its output clean at cinema levels, and the acoustically transparent grille can stay on without dulling detail. Match levels through your receiver’s calibration, set the centre crossover in the usual small-speaker range, and let the subwoofer handle the deepest effects.

Who the CS9040 suits

Choose the CS9040 if dialogue clarity is your priority, especially as the centrepiece of a Definitive Technology BP9000 system. It suits film and series viewers who are tired of raising the volume for speech and lowering it for action, and it completes a matched front stage for anyone building a serious living-room theatre.
