Definitive Technology BP9020 Tower Speaker

Definitive Technology BP9020 – Bipolar Tower Sound With Built-In Powered Bass

The Definitive Technology BP9020 is the entry point into the BP9000 series, and it carries the idea that made the range famous: a bipolar driver array that fires sound from both the front and the back of the cabinet. The reflections from the rear array reach your ears a fraction after the direct sound, and the brain reads that as space. Music opens up, soundstages widen well beyond the cabinets, and film soundtracks feel less like they are coming from two boxes and more like they are happening in the room.

Unlike most tower speakers, the BP9020 also has a powered subwoofer built into its base, so the low frequencies are handled by a dedicated amplifier rather than loading your receiver. This listing is for a single tower; two form a stereo pair or the front stage of a home theatre.

Key features

• Bipolar array with drivers firing forward and rearward for a spacious soundstage
• Integrated 8-inch powered subwoofer with its own 150 W amplifier
• Aluminium dome tweeter for detailed, extended high frequencies
• BDSS midrange drivers front and rear for a balanced power response
• Intelligent Bass Control dial on the rear sets subwoofer level independently
• Docking port on top accepts the optional A90 Dolby Atmos height module
• Slim cabinet with acoustically transparent grille and aluminium top plate
• Easy to drive, so it works well with mid-power AV receivers and stereo amplifiers

Why bipolar sounds different

A conventional speaker sends nearly all its energy forward, and the soundstage is largely confined to the space between the two cabinets. The BP9020’s rear drivers radiate the same programme material backwards, where it reflects off the wall behind and arrives slightly delayed. That delayed energy is what concert halls produce naturally, and it is why bipolar speakers are often described as sounding bigger and more enveloping than their size suggests.

The effect is not a gimmick that wears thin: orchestral recordings gain hall ambience, live albums feel live, and in a theatre system the front stage blends more convincingly into the surround field. Placement rewards a little space behind the cabinet, so the rear array has a wall to work with.

Powered bass, built in

The 8-inch subwoofer in the base is driven by its own 150 W Class D amplifier with a rear-panel level control, so bass output can be matched to the room without touching your amplifier’s settings. Because the deepest frequencies are self-powered, the main amplifier only handles the midrange and treble, which keeps it comfortable at high levels. Many owners find the BP9020 needs no separate subwoofer for music and only adds one for the largest theatre rooms.

Building a system around it

Start with a pair for stereo, or use BP9020 towers as the front left and right of a BP9000 series theatre with matching centre and surround speakers. If you move to Dolby Atmos later, the A90 height module simply docks onto the top plate and connects through the cabinet, with no extra stands or ceiling work.

For listeners who want tower-speaker scale and immersion without a separate subwoofer or a demanding amplifier load, the BP9020 remains the most accessible way into Definitive Technology’s bipolar flagship thinking.
