The Definitive Technology Descend DN12 is a 12-inch ultra-performance subwoofer for large rooms and dedicated theatres — deep, controlled, room-pressurising bass.
The Definitive Technology Descend DN12 is a 12-inch powered subwoofer that uses Definitive’s 3XR architecture: one front-firing 12-inch long-throw woofer flanked by two side-firing 12-inch passive radiators, which together move the air of a much larger driver while keeping the sealed cabinet compact. A Class H amplifier delivers 500 watts RMS (1,500 watts peak), a 56-bit DSP manages extension and protection, and the rated frequency response runs from 25 Hz to 150 Hz. Finish is Midnight Black.
Key features
12-inch long-throw woofer with dual 12-inch passive radiators (3XR)
500 W RMS / 1,500 W peak Class H amplification
Frequency response 25 Hz to 150 Hz (+/-3 dB)
56-bit DSP with Intelligent Phase Control
Three EQ modes: Flat, Deep and Loud
Remote control with on-sub LED display
LFE, line-level and speaker-level inputs
3XR radiator architecture
A conventional ported subwoofer trades cabinet size for extension and risks port noise at high output; a sealed box is clean but limited. The DN12’s dual passive radiators take the third path: the radiators are driven by the air pressure inside the sealed cabinet, extending output to 25 Hz with the control of a sealed design and no port artefacts. Definitive rates the system as producing the bass output of a traditional 15-inch subwoofer from this 12-inch platform.
DSP, phase and EQ
The 56-bit DSP extends low-frequency response, limits distortion and runs Intelligent Phase Control, which aligns the subwoofer’s output with the main speakers in fine steps — phase is adjustable from -135 to +180 degrees in 45-degree increments — because a subwoofer that is out of phase cancels the very bass it was bought for. Three EQ modes tailor the balance: Flat for measurement-true response, Deep for maximum extension, and Loud for maximum output at parties and action films.
Control and integration
Volume, crossover (40 to 120 Hz) and phase are adjusted from the supplied remote, with the settings shown on the subwoofer’s own LED display — no crawling behind the cabinet. A 12 V trigger input and IR pass-through integrate the DN12 with control systems and AV receivers, and inputs cover every connection style: single LFE RCA, stereo RCA line-in and speaker-level binding posts for amplifiers without a subwoofer output.
Cabinet
The DN12 measures 475.5 x 458.2 x 484.8 mm and weighs 29.9 kg on permanently installed rubber-padded feet. Multiple DN12s can be combined for smoother bass across larger rooms, as Definitive recommends for even seat-to-seat response.
Descend range context
The DN12 tops Definitive’s Descend series above the DN8 and DN10, sharing their DSP, remote and phase-control systems with the largest driver complement and deepest extension. It is voiced to partner Definitive’s own Demand and Dymension speaker ranges but integrates with any brand through its crossover, phase and EQ controls.
