Pure Acoustics SuperNova SN12 12-inch Powered Subwoofer

Pure Acoustics SuperNova SN12 12-inch Powered Subwoofer – powered bass for home theatre

The Pure Acoustics SuperNova SN12 is a powered subwoofer built around a 12-inch driver, created to give home theatre and music systems the low-frequency weight that bookshelf and satellite speakers cannot produce on their own. Explosions, film scores, electronic music and the lowest notes of acoustic instruments all depend on a dedicated subwoofer, and the SN12’s large driver moves the air needed to reproduce that range with authority in a typical living room or media room.

The SN12 belongs to Pure Acoustics’ SuperNova series, the brand’s home entertainment speaker line. Because the amplifier is built into the cabinet and matched to the driver by the manufacturer, there is no separate power amplifier to choose or configure: the subwoofer connects to an AV receiver or processor with a single cable and is ready to integrate with the rest of the system. It pairs naturally with Pure Acoustics satellite and bookshelf packages, and works equally well as the bass foundation for other brands of main speakers.

Key features

• 12-inch driver for deep, room-filling low frequencies
• Built-in amplifier matched to the driver for controlled output
• Powered design, so no external amplifier is required
• Onboard level control to set subwoofer volume against the main speakers
• Adjustable crossover to set the handover point to the main speakers
• Single-cable connection from an AV receiver subwoofer output
• Designed for home theatre and music systems
• Part of the Pure Acoustics SuperNova series
• Suitable as the bass partner for satellite speaker packages

Bass performance

A 12-inch cone has the surface area to shift serious amounts of air, which is what gives film soundtracks their physical impact and music its foundation. With its amplifier designed specifically for this driver and enclosure, the SN12 is intended to deliver that output in a controlled way rather than as loose, boomy rumble. Set the level so the subwoofer underpins the main speakers instead of dominating them, and bass lines, kick drums and low effects gain weight while dialogue and midrange detail stay clear.

Integration and controls

Getting a subwoofer to blend is mostly about two settings, and the SN12 provides both. The crossover control sets where the subwoofer takes over from the main speakers, so smaller satellites can hand off lower than large floorstanders. The level control balances the subwoofer’s contribution against the rest of the system. On most AV receivers, bass management in the receiver and the subwoofer’s own controls are set together during initial setup, then fine-tuned by ear with familiar music and film scenes.

Placement in the room

Start with the SN12 near the front wall, close to the main speakers, which usually gives the smoothest blend. Moving it into a corner increases output if bass feels light in a large room, while pulling it a few inches away from the wall can tighten the sound if it becomes boomy. Because low frequencies interact strongly with room dimensions, small movements of the cabinet can make a worthwhile difference, so experiment before settling on the final position.

The SuperNova SN12 is for home theatre and music listeners whose speakers stop short in the bass and who want a straightforward, self-powered solution. If your system sounds thin on films or lacks drive on music, adding this 12-inch powered subwoofer is the single most effective upgrade you can make.
