Description
Sony SA-SW7 Wireless Subwoofer
The Sony SA-SW7, sold as the BRAVIA Theatre Sub 7, is an optional wireless subwoofer for Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre soundbars, home theatre systems and the STR-AN1000 AV receiver. A soundbar on its own has to reproduce dialogue, music and effects from a shallow cabinet fixed under a television, which limits how much air it can move at low frequencies. Adding a dedicated subwoofer hands those low frequencies to a cabinet and driver designed only for that job, and the difference is physical as much as tonal: explosions, drums, engines and orchestral weight gain presence you feel, while the soundbar is freed to reproduce voices and detail more cleanly.
The SA-SW7 does this without a signal cable. It connects wirelessly to the compatible Sony system, so its position in the room can be chosen for acoustics and furniture rather than for cable reach. Its cabinet is slim at 134 mm deep and can be positioned in two orientations, which makes it easier to place beside a sofa, alongside a media unit or flat against a wall than a conventional cube-shaped subwoofer.
Key features
- 100 W of bass output: A 130 mm driver driven by Sony’s S-Master digital amplifier delivers deep, controlled low frequencies for film and music.
- Wireless connection: No subwoofer cable between the soundbar or system and the subwoofer, so placement follows the room rather than the wiring.
- Two-way positioning: The slim cabinet can be installed in either of two orientations to suit the space beside furniture or against a wall.
- Separated Notch Edge: Concentric cuts in the rubber surround improve vertical amplitude symmetry, helping the driver move evenly and keep distortion down.
- Dual subwoofer support: Compatible systems can run two of these subwoofers for stronger, more even bass coverage across a larger room.
- BRAVIA Connect app setup: Initial setup, volume and sound field control are handled through the BRAVIA Connect smartphone app.
- BRAVIA TV integration: Sound settings appear in the BRAVIA Quick Settings menu on a compatible television, so adjustment stays on the TV remote.
Compatibility
Sony publishes the SA-SW7 for use with its BRAVIA Theatre family and related models: the BRAVIA Theatre Quad (HT-A9M2), BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000), BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8 (HT-A8000) and BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7, the earlier HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000 soundbars, and the STR-AN1000 AV receiver. It is a system component rather than a general-purpose subwoofer, so it is intended for those Sony models and connects through their own wireless subwoofer link rather than through a line-level input. Owners of a compatible Sony system gain a matched upgrade that the host system recognises and calibrates as part of the whole.
Bass performance
The 130 mm driver and 100 W S-Master amplifier are tuned for impact at real listening levels rather than for specification-sheet depth alone. Sony’s Separated Notch Edge surround addresses a specific problem in subwoofer drivers: as excursion increases, an ordinary surround deforms unevenly, which colours the sound and adds distortion. The notched edge controls the stress across the surround so the diaphragm moves more symmetrically, keeping bass notes clean during loud effects passages. Because low frequencies are largely non-directional, the subwoofer can sit where it loads the room best while the soundbar keeps the image anchored to the screen.
Design and placement
At 352 mm wide, 358 mm high and 134 mm deep, and weighing 6.2 kg, the Sub 7 is closer in proportion to a slim tower than a cube. Sony has styled it to blend into a living space, with cabling kept discreet at the base and a finish intended to look deliberate from every angle, since a wireless subwoofer is often placed in open view. The two orientation options mean it can stand tall beside a unit or sit in the alternative position where height is restricted. Trying more than one position is worthwhile: corner placement usually gives the strongest output, while a position along a wall often gives the smoothest response across the seating area.
Everyday use
Once set up through the BRAVIA Connect app, the subwoofer becomes part of the system rather than a separate device to manage. Volume and sound settings follow the host system, software updates are notified through the app, and on a compatible BRAVIA television the relevant controls appear in the Quick Settings menu. Power consumption is 20 W in operation.
For owners of a compatible Sony BRAVIA Theatre system, the SA-SW7 is the single most effective upgrade step: it adds the low-frequency foundation that a slim soundbar cannot produce on its own, without adding cables, a separate amplifier or a large cabinet to the room.
