The Polk Audio Monitor XT10 is a 10-inch powered subwoofer from the Monitor XT series, built to give music and home theatre systems the low-frequency foundation that bookshelf and compact tower speakers cannot produce on their own. A long-throw, high-excursion Dynamic Balance woofer fires downward into the floor, driven by a Class D amplifier rated at 50 watts continuous and 100 watts peak, inside a critically braced ported cabinet. The result is extension down to 24 Hz from a box that still fits beside a media unit or in a corner of a modest room.

The XT10 is timbre- and design-matched to the Monitor XT speaker range, but its job is universal: reproduce the LFE channel of film mixes, fill in the lowest octaves of music, and take low-bass load off the main speakers so they play cleaner at a given volume. The phase switch is set by ear at the listening seat: whichever position gives fuller, tighter bass at the crossover region is correct. Film listeners can run the LFE level a little hotter; music listeners usually prefer a more conservative setting.

Growing the system

A single XT10 transforms a Monitor XT stereo or 5.1 system; a second XT10, placed asymmetrically in the room, evens out seat-to-seat bass variation and adds headroom for larger spaces. Because the amplifier and controls are identical, matching two units takes minutes.
