What passive radiators actually do

A passive radiator is a driver cone without a motor, tuned to resonate with the air inside the cabinet. At the lowest frequencies it moves in place of a port, reinforcing output where the active driver alone would roll off. Unlike a port, it makes no wind noise at high output and needs no long tube, so the cabinet stays compact. Definitive uses two radiators, opposed, so their reaction forces cancel – the box stays still while the air does the work.
