The JBL Stage 240H is a dual-purpose height and surround speaker from the Stage 2 series, designed at JBL’s Northridge acoustic engineering centre. With the flip of a switch on its dual-mode crossover network, the same speaker works as a Dolby Atmos-enabled add-on module — sitting on top of Stage 260F or 280F floorstanders and bouncing height effects off the ceiling — or as a wall-mounted elevation or surround speaker firing directly at the listeners. It is a 2-way sealed design with a 4.5-inch (114 mm) polycellulose ribbed-cone woofer and a 1-inch (25 mm) anodised aluminium dome tweeter in JBL’s next-generation HDI waveguide.

Specifications: frequency response 85 Hz to 25 kHz (±6 dB; 100 Hz – 25 kHz at -3 dB), sensitivity 87 dB (2.83V @ 1 m), nominal impedance 6 ohms, crossover at 1.6 kHz, and recommended amplifier power of 20–150 W (75 W RMS). The sealed enclosure keeps the cabinet compact and placement-tolerant — there is no port to interact with walls, which suits both on-top-of-tower and on-wall positions.

Atmos-enabled vs direct-firing height

As an Atmos-enabled module, the 240H angles its output up to reflect off a flat ceiling (ideally 2.3–4.3 m high), and the receiver’s height-channel processing shapes the reflected sound into overhead effects — no ceiling cutting, no cable in the walls. Wall-mounted high near the ceiling in “surround” mode, it fires directly instead, giving a more precise image for rooms where reflections do not work, such as vaulted or heavily treated ceilings. One product covers both approaches, which is why it also serves as a compact surround speaker.

System matching

The 240H shares its drivers, HDI waveguide and Espresso/Latte finishes with the rest of Stage 2, and its binding posts match the JBL MA series AV receivers for a cohesive system look. Add a pair (or two pairs) to a Stage 2 5.1 system for 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 Atmos.
