Polk Audio RC60I 6.5-inch In-Ceiling Speakers (Pair)

Polk Audio RC60i 6.5-inch In-Ceiling Speakers (Pair)

The Polk Audio RC60i is a two-way in-ceiling speaker built around a 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) Dynamic Balance mid-bass driver, supplied here as a matched pair. The pair format is the standard starting point for built-in audio: two speakers give proper stereo in a single room, two matched height channels for a Dolby Atmos layout, or the front or rear pair of an all-ceiling surround system. The 6.5-inch format is the most widely used ceiling size because it balances real bass output against a modest cutout, and the RC60i adds an aimable tweeter and moisture-resistant construction that let the same pair work in living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms alike.

Key features

• 6.5-inch Dynamic Balance mineral-filled polypropylene cone woofer with rubber suspension
• 3/4-inch soft dome tweeter in a ball-and-socket swivel mount
• Total frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz
• 89 dB efficiency, easy to drive from standard amplifiers
• Recommended amplifier power of 20 to 100 watts per channel
• Moisture-resistant build for kitchens, bathrooms and humid spaces
• Paintable grilles and rotating-cam installation

Dynamic Balance driver pair

Each RC60i combines a 6.5-inch mineral-filled polypropylene cone with a rubber suspension and a 3/4-inch (1.9 cm) soft dome tweeter. The cone material and surround are tuned as a system under Polk’s Dynamic Balance method, keeping the midrange clear and the bass tidy rather than boomy, which is exactly what a ceiling cavity rewards. The tweeter sits in a ball-and-socket mount, so it can be swivelled toward the seats. Ceiling positions are usually dictated by joists and lights, not by ideal stereo geometry, and an aimable tweeter is how a pair of ceiling speakers still produces a focused image and intelligible dialogue at the listening position.

Sound and system matching

The rated total frequency response is 40 Hz to 20 kHz, with 89 dB efficiency at 1 watt and 1 metre, so the RC60i reaches satisfying levels from the modest per-channel power of multi-zone amplifiers and AV receivers. Impedance is compatible with 8-ohm amplifiers, and the recommended range is 20 to 100 watts per channel. Spring-loaded clips take the speaker cable directly, keeping the rear of the speaker simple inside the ceiling. In a home theatre, a pair covers height or surround duties cleanly; in a music system, pairs can be repeated room by room for consistent whole-home coverage, all driven from one distribution amplifier.

Moisture resistance and placement

Moisture-resistant construction means the RC60i is not limited to dry rooms. Kitchens, bathrooms and other humid indoor spaces are within its brief, which simplifies planning a whole-home system: the same speaker can run through every zone instead of stopping at the bathroom door. Positioned in pairs over a listening area they give even stereo coverage; spread singly across a large space, additional pairs keep levels even without pushing any one speaker hard.

Installation and finish

Each speaker fits a 7 5/16 inch (19.21 cm) diameter cutout and needs only 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) of depth behind half-inch drywall, so the pair suits shallow ceiling voids where deeper speakers will not fit. Overall diameter is 9 inches (22.9 cm). Rotating cams secure the speaker from the front, and the grilles are paintable, so once the ceiling is finished the pair all but disappears.

For stereo zones, Atmos height channels and multi-room music that has to survive humid rooms as well as living rooms, the RC60i pair is a proven, easy-installing combination: balanced 6.5-inch output, an aimable soft dome tweeter and a shallow fit that works in most ceilings.
