ELAC Debut 2.0 C5.2 Centre Speaker

The ELAC Debut 2.0 C5.2 is the centre channel of the Debut 2.0 series, designed by Andrew Jones to give film and television dialogue the clarity the centre speaker is responsible for. In a surround mix, most speech and on-screen action passes through this one cabinet, so the C5.2 uses two 5.25-inch aramid-fibre woofers flanking a 1-inch cloth dome tweeter, in a wide, low cabinet voiced to match the Debut 2.0 bookshelf and floorstanding models across the front stage.

Built around dialogue

The twin-woofer layout spreads the centre image across the seating area instead of beaming it at one chair, and the crossover, set at 2,200 Hz, is tuned for the midrange where voices live. Aramid fibre gives the cones the stiffness to stay composed under film-soundtrack dynamics while remaining light enough for fine detail, and oversized magnets with vented pole pieces keep control at high levels. The tweeter’s waveguide shapes its output to blend with the woofers, so speech stays natural as actors move across the screen and the sound hands over to the left and right speakers.

A cabinet that stays out of the way

Centre speakers usually sit on a shelf, inside a media unit or directly under a television, places where a rear port would boom against the wall behind it. ELAC moved the C5.2’s ports to the front, in two dual-flared openings that move air quietly, so the speaker can sit close to a wall or inside furniture without the bass thickening. The cabinet itself is CARB2-rated MDF, larger and more heavily braced than the first-generation Debut centre, finished in black ash vinyl with a removable grille. Nothing about the design asks for special treatment; it works where centre speakers actually live.

System fit

The C5.2 measures 540 mm wide, 180 mm high and 219 mm deep, and weighs 8.3 kg, so measure your TV stand shelf before ordering; its width surprises some buyers. Sensitivity of 87 dB and a 6-ohm nominal impedance suit the AV receivers most Debut systems are built around, and tonal matching with the B5.2, B6.2 and F5.2 keeps the front three speakers sounding like one. Set the receiver’s centre level after auto-calibration, cross over to a subwoofer at around 80 Hz, and dialogue gains the presence that makes a home theatre feel finished rather than assembled, and quiet scenes stay intelligible without reaching for the volume control.
