The JBL Stage A135C is a low-profile centre channel speaker from JBL’s Stage series, engineered in Northridge, California. Six 3-inch polycellulose woofers flank a 1-inch aluminium dome tweeter, an unusually generous driver count for a centre speaker, chosen so dialogue and on-screen effects stay clear and evenly spread across a wide seating area. The cabinet stands only about 105 mm tall, so it fits into the space below most televisions without crowding the screen.

The tweeter works through JBL’s patented HDI (High Definition Imaging) waveguide, the same geometry used in JBL’s studio monitors, which controls dispersion so the sound stays detailed off-axis rather than collapsing for viewers sitting to the sides. Side-firing tuned ports in the bass-reflex cabinet extend the low end, and frequency response runs from 75 Hz to 40 kHz. With 90 dB sensitivity and a 6-ohm load, the A135C is an easy match for AV receivers in the 20 to 150 watt range.

The HDI Waveguide, Explained

A waveguide is the shaped horn in front of the tweeter. JBL’s HDI geometry, derived from its professional M2 monitor, manages how high frequencies leave the speaker so that dispersion stays wide and consistent where the tweeter hands over to the woofers at the 2.5 kHz crossover. In a centre channel that consistency matters more than anywhere else: every seat should hear the same vocal balance, not a version that changes as you move along the sofa.

Placement

The A135C sits happily on a cabinet or shelf under the screen, and keyhole slots on the rear allow wall mounting when furniture space is tight. Keep the front face close to the shelf edge to avoid reflections off the surface below it, and angle it slightly towards ear height if it sits low. It is voice-matched to the other Stage models, so it pairs naturally with Stage A130, A170, A180 or A190 front speakers in a complete JBL Stage home theatre.
