The JBL Control 65P/T is a compact pendant loudspeaker from JBL Professional’s Control Contractor series, made for spaces where the architecture rules out wall or ceiling mounting: atriums, restaurants, bars, retail floors, transport hubs and houses of worship with high or open ceilings. The speaker hangs from the ceiling structure on its supplied steel suspension cables, bringing the sound source down towards the listeners and covering the floor below with an unusually wide and even pattern.

That coverage comes from JBL’s Radiation Boundary Integrator (RBI) technology, adapted from the company’s VERTEC line arrays. A coaxial driver set — a 5.25-inch (130 mm) woofer with a 0.75-inch (20 mm) soft-dome tweeter at its centre — feeds the RBI waveguide, which produces a consistent 120-degree conical pattern. Because the directivity stays constant, the tonal balance a listener hears at the edge of the pattern closely matches what is heard directly underneath, and fewer speakers are needed to cover a given floor area evenly.

Distributed-Line Flexibility

The built-in multi-tap transformer lets the 65P/T slot into constant-voltage systems of any size. On a 70 V line the taps are 60, 30, 15 and 7.5 watts; on 100 V they are 60, 30 and 15 watts, and a direct 8-ohm setting serves small low-impedance systems. Rated impedance in bypass mode is 8 ohms and sensitivity is 86 dB. Installers can set each pendant’s level by zone — louder over a bar, quieter over dining tables — while the loop-through connector passes the line on to the next speaker without home-run cabling.

Suspension and Safety

Two independent suspension systems are supplied, one working cable and one safety cable, each a 4.5 m galvanised steel assembly with Gripple fasteners rated to a 45 kg safe working load — a large margin over the speaker’s 3.7 kg weight. Cable length is infinitely adjustable, so pendants can be levelled precisely even where the ceiling structure is uneven. Terminal covers are included, the steel grille can be removed for painting, and the speaker and suspension system are UL-listed for commercial installation, with an IP-44 splashproof rating and construction that exceeds Mil Spec 810 environmental testing.

Applications

The 65P/T suits foreground music and paging in restaurants, cafés, retail stores, fitness centres, airports and exhibition spaces — anywhere even coverage from a high ceiling is the requirement. Its high-impact polystyrene enclosure keeps weight low for suspended duty, and the compact 234 mm diameter housing reads as a light fitting rather than a loudspeaker.
