The Sonos Sub 4 is the fourth-generation wireless subwoofer for Sonos home systems, in a matte white finish. It pairs over WiFi with Sonos soundbars and speakers, Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam and Ray, or Five, Era 300 and Era 100, and takes over the lowest frequencies so the paired product can concentrate on dialogue, detail and everything above the bass. Sonos rates its low-frequency response down to 25 Hz, the region where film effects, electronic music and organ notes stop being only heard and start being felt in the room.

Inside the ported cabinet, two 5 x 8 inch elliptical woofers face inward toward each other, each driven by its own Class-D digital amplifier. Because the woofers move in opposition, the mechanical energy that would shake an ordinary subwoofer cabinet cancels itself out: Sonos calls this a force-cancelling design, and its practical benefit is deep output without the rattling, buzzing and floor vibration that give away lesser subwoofers at high volume.

Setup takes minutes, placement is flexible

Sub 4 has no audio inputs and wants none: plug in the power cable, open the Sonos app, and the join button on the cabinet adds it to your system. Because the connection is wireless, placement is decided by where the bass sounds best rather than where a cable reaches, and the cabinet works standing upright or lying flat, for example beneath a sofa or media unit. Automatic equalisation balances the subwoofer with whatever it is paired with, and the app still leaves bass, treble and loudness adjustments in your hands afterwards. A 10/100 Ethernet port is provided if you prefer a hardwired network connection.

Trueplay and system behaviour

Rooms change bass more than any other part of the spectrum, reinforcing it in corners and cancelling it in the middle of the floor. Trueplay tuning uses a supported phone to measure the acoustics of your actual room and fine-tunes the system to compensate, so the Sub 4 you hear is calibrated to your furniture and floor rather than a laboratory. In a home theatre setup, a second Sub 4 can be added alongside the first with compatible soundbars for larger rooms. Note that Sub 4 works only within the Sonos ecosystem: it must be paired with an amplified, non-portable Sonos product and cannot be connected to third-party soundbars or speakers.

Who it suits

Sub 4 is for Sonos owners whose films, games and music feel complete except at the bottom. It is the natural partner for an Arc Ultra or Arc in a main living room, brings cinema weight to a Beam in a smaller space, and adds the foundation that stereo Era or Five setups need for full-range music. The cabinet measures 389 x 402 x 158 mm and weighs 11.79 kg, substantial in the hand, discreet in the room once placed.
