Sony HT-A9M2 with SA-SW5 Subwoofer – Wireless Home Theatre That Fills the Whole Room

The Sony HT-A9M2 is a home theatre system built around four wireless speakers and a separate control box, rather than a single soundbar. Each speaker carries a tweeter, a woofer and an up-firing driver, and together with the SA-SW5 wireless subwoofer included in this package the system runs to 16 speaker units in total. Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping uses those drivers to build a sound field that extends well beyond the physical speakers, so film soundtracks wrap around the seating position instead of stopping at the screen.

Because the speakers are wireless, placement is unusually flexible: no speaker cables cross the room, and the system calibrates itself to where the speakers actually are, not where a diagram says they should go.

Key features

• Four wireless speakers, each with tweeter, woofer and up-firing height driver
• SA-SW5 wireless subwoofer included, with a large driver and passive radiator design
• 360 Spatial Sound Mapping creates phantom speakers beyond the physical units
• Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding for object-based film soundtracks
• IMAX Enhanced certified for compatible IMAX content
• Sound Field Optimisation auto-calibrates the system to your room and seating
• HDMI eARC connection with 8K and 4K at 120 Hz passthrough for gaming sources
• Music streaming over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with Spotify Connect and AirPlay 2
• Works as the wireless rear and height system alongside compatible Sony soundbars

360 Spatial Sound Mapping, explained

Conventional surround systems place sound at the speakers. 360 Spatial Sound Mapping measures the distance and angle between the four HT-A9M2 speakers and your listening position, then uses that geometry to synthesise additional phantom speakers in the gaps. The effect is a continuous bubble of sound: rain in an Atmos mix falls across the whole ceiling plane rather than from four points, and effects pan smoothly around the room instead of jumping from box to box.

The up-firing driver in each speaker handles the height layer, bouncing ceiling reflections into the sound field so overhead content has genuine vertical placement. Dialogue stays anchored to the screen through the centre image the system builds between the front pair, and an optional Acoustic Center Sync mode lets a compatible Sony television act as the centre channel for even tighter integration.

The SA-SW5 subwoofer

Bass is handled by the SA-SW5, Sony’s flagship wireless subwoofer for this platform. Its sealed enclosure pairs an active driver with a passive radiator, which keeps low frequencies tight and controlled rather than boomy, and it connects wirelessly so it can sit wherever it performs best in the room. It gives the system the low-end weight that film effects and orchestral scores need, while the four main speakers stay focused on clarity and imaging.

Setup and everyday use

Setup is deliberately simple: place the four speakers roughly at the corners of your listening area, connect the control box to the television over HDMI eARC, and run the on-screen calibration. There is no receiver and no speaker wire. Day to day, the same system also streams music in high resolution, and it can pair with a compatible Sony soundbar later to expand the front stage.

For viewers who want genuine Atmos immersion without turning the living room into a wiring project, the HT-A9M2 with the SW5 is one of the most complete wireless theatre packages Sony has made.
