The Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar (model SB01) is the original AMBEO soundbar: a single, substantial enclosure engineered to reproduce a 5.1.4 immersive soundstage without separate surround speakers, ceiling speakers or an external subwoofer. Thirteen individually amplified drivers, automatic room calibration and Sennheiser’s AMBEO virtualisation technology work together to place sound around and above the listening position by using the room’s own walls and ceiling as reflectors. It remains the reference point for what a one-box home cinema system can do, and it should not be confused with the later, smaller Soundbar Plus or Soundbar Mini models.

Support for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and MPEG-H means object-based soundtracks are decoded natively, while AMBEO Upmix technology can recreate conventional stereo and 5.1 content in three dimensions for listeners working through an older film and music library.

The driver array and AMBEO processing

Nine drivers face forward across the front of the cabinet, two tweeters are angled into the side panels and two full-range drivers fire upward from the top surface, bouncing height information off the ceiling. Dual-core processing, combining a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A7 processor with SHARC DSP, runs the AMBEO virtualisation that shapes these reflections into a coherent three-dimensional field. The AMBEO effect can be switched off or set to Light, Standard or Boost, so the listener decides how expansive the presentation should be for a given programme. Five presets tailor tonal balance for film, music, sport, news and a neutral setting, and a graphic OLED display with a brightness sensor keeps status information discreet.

Calibration and the room

Immersive virtualisation depends on the room, so Sennheiser includes a calibration microphone that plugs into the bar. Placed at the listening position, it lets the soundbar measure the space and build its correction and virtualisation around the actual reflection pattern. Calibration can be repeated whenever furniture or seating changes, and it is a significant part of why the AMBEO produces stable imaging rather than a vague sense of spaciousness. For best results Sennheiser recommends the bar has reflective surfaces within reach of its side and upward-firing drivers, and that the top of the cabinet is left unobstructed.

Connections and control

Three HDMI 2.0a inputs accept sources directly, with 4K at 60 Hz and Dolby Vision pass-through, and a single HDMI output with eARC connects to the television. Optical S/PDIF, stereo RCA analogue input, Ethernet and Bluetooth 4.2 cover legacy sources and wireless playback, while Chromecast built-in, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and UPnP handle network streaming. A mono RCA subwoofer pre-out is provided for anyone who later wants to add an external subwoofer. The Sennheiser Smart Control app for iOS and Android manages settings, presets and firmware updates, and the bar measures approximately 126.5 cm wide, 13.5 cm high and 17.1 cm deep with feet fitted, weighing about 18.5 kg, so a sturdy stand or wall mounting should be planned.

For viewers who want genuine object-based cinema sound but cannot or will not install nine separate speakers, the original AMBEO Soundbar is still the most complete single-enclosure answer Sennheiser has made: full-range, calibrated, and unapologetically built around real drivers rather than processing alone.
