Monitor Audio Mass Satellite Speaker (Each)

Monitor Audio Mass Satellite Speaker (Each)

The Monitor Audio MASS Satellite is the compact two-way speaker at the heart of the second-generation MASS surround sound system, sold here as a single unit so a system can be built or extended one channel at a time. Each satellite combines a 3 1/2 inch (89 mm) MMP II mid-bass driver with a 3/4 inch (19 mm) soft dome tweeter in a small sealed cabinet, tuned for wide dispersion and for clean integration with a subwoofer handling the lowest octaves. The design uses point-source acoustic alignment, placing the two drivers so their output arrives together and images stay focused rather than smeared. A rigid, braced and fibre-reinforced cabinet keeps the enclosure quiet, and the custom-weave cloth finish gives the speaker the look of soft furnishing rather than hi-fi hardware. In Midnight, the black-blue finish shown here, or in Mist white-grey, it is a satellite designed to be heard across a whole film soundtrack while barely registering visually in the room.

Driver Technology

The mid-bass driver uses Monitor Audio’s MMP II cone technology, a Metal Matrix Polymer material chosen for its combination of low mass and high rigidity. Advanced FEA simulation was used to optimise the cone and motor unit performance, so the small driver moves in a controlled, pistonic way through the midrange where dialogue and most soundtrack detail live. The soft dome tweeter is fitted with thermal protection and hands over to the mid-bass driver at a 3.0 kHz crossover frequency. Because the cabinet is sealed, bass rolls off in a controlled manner that suits subwoofer crossover settings in an AV receiver, and Monitor Audio publishes a power handling figure of 70 W RMS when the amplifier crossover is set at 150 Hz, alongside a 30 W RMS full-range figure. Recommended amplifier power is 25 to 100 W into the satellite’s 8 ohm nominal impedance.

Room Placement and Mounting

Placement flexibility is central to the MASS Satellite brief. A single integrated point on the cabinet accepts a stand mount, and the speaker is compatible with the optional MASM bracket for wall mounting, while dedicated MASS stands are also available for positions where neither a wall nor furniture suits. The rear cover hides the binding posts once cables are connected, so a wall-mounted satellite presents a clean cloth surface from every normal viewing angle. Wide dispersion means the speaker does not need to be aimed with laboratory precision to cover a seating area, which helps in real living rooms where surround speakers often sit higher, lower or further off-axis than a textbook diagram suggests. Used as front, centre or surround channels in multiples, the satellites keep a consistent voice because every channel uses the identical driver set and cabinet.

System Building

Because the MASS Satellite is sold individually, system design starts from the room rather than from a fixed box count. A pair can serve as compact front speakers with a subwoofer, three can form the front stage of a surround system, and five satellites with the matching MASS Subwoofer reproduce the complete second-generation MASS 5.1 layout. The satellite’s published frequency response of 105 Hz to 34,000 Hz at -6 dB confirms its intended role: it is a true satellite, designed to be crossed over to a subwoofer, typically in the 120 to 150 Hz region, rather than asked to produce deep bass on its own. Its 80 dB sensitivity and maximum SPL of 98 dB measured as a pair suit small to medium rooms, desktop-adjacent cinema corners, bedrooms and secondary viewing spaces where a full-size speaker package would dominate.

Sound Character

The voicing aim is clarity at modest size. The sealed alignment avoids the port noise and overhang that small ported cabinets can introduce at high levels, and the point-source layout keeps effects positioned accurately as they move around the room. Dialogue benefits from the dedicated mid-bass cone working well inside its comfort zone, while the soft dome tweeter extends to 34 kHz on paper and gives cymbals, room ambience and game audio a clean top end without a hard edge. It is a speaker for listeners who want the Monitor Audio approach to detail and integration in a cabinet that measures just 147 mm tall and weighs 1.12 kg, light enough for wall brackets and stands to hold without drama.

The Monitor Audio MASS Satellite, in this second-generation form and Midnight finish, is a small speaker with a specific job: focused, wide-dispersion sound for surround systems that need to fit ordinary rooms and ordinary furniture. Sold individually, it lets a system grow channel by channel while keeping every position tonally identical.
