Monitor Audio W180 In-Wall Speaker (Each)

Monitor Audio W180 In-Wall Speaker (Each)

The Monitor Audio W180 is a two-way in-wall speaker from the British company’s custom installation range, sold individually. It is built for rooms where even a bookshelf speaker is one too many: once fitted, the W180 sits flush inside the wall and only its grille shows, yet the 8-inch bass driver gives it the scale and bass weight that smaller in-wall models struggle to produce. That makes it equally at home as a stereo speaker in a living room, a front or surround channel in a discreet home cinema, or a repeated unit in a multi-room system.

The bass driver is an 8-inch MMP II cone — Monitor Audio’s Metal Matrix Polymer material, which combines low mass with high rigidity — and the high frequencies come from the company’s 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. The rated frequency response is 50 Hz to 25 kHz, sensitivity is 90 dB and maximum output reaches 111.6 dBA. Power handling is 120 watts RMS with recommended amplifier power between 30 and 120 watts, and the 6-ohm nominal impedance is a comfortable load for multi-zone and home cinema amplifiers.

Key features

• 8-inch MMP II cone bass driver for full-range output from the wall
• 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter that pivots towards the listening position
• Frequency response of 50 Hz to 25 kHz
• 90 dB sensitivity and 111.6 dBA maximum SPL
• 120 W RMS power handling; 6-ohm nominal impedance
• Three-position HF level switch: +3 dB, 0 dB, minus 3 dB
• Six-position Tri-Grip dog fixings for a secure, rattle-free mount
• 387 x 234 mm cut-out with 100 mm mounting depth

Aiming and Tuning After Installation

Two adjustments separate the W180 from basic in-wall speakers. The tweeter pivots, so it can be angled towards the seats when the speaker position is dictated by joists or furniture rather than acoustics. The high-frequency level switch then trims the top end by plus or minus 3 dB to compensate for the room: up for heavily furnished, absorptive spaces, down for hard, reflective ones. Together they let an installer correct the two most common in-wall problems — off-axis placement and room brightness — after the wall is closed.

Installation

The W180 fits a 387 x 234 mm cut-out and needs 100 mm of depth behind the mounting surface; overall dimensions including the grille are 441 x 288 mm with an overall depth of 104 mm. Monitor Audio’s Tri-Grip dog-leg fixings clamp at six positions, spreading the load and pulling the frame evenly against the wall so the installation stays rattle-free at high levels. The frame is mineral-filled ABS. For new-build work, a WB8 pre-construction bracket can be fitted before the wall is finished, and an optional back box can be used where sound transfer into the adjoining room needs controlling.

System Building

Sold as each, the W180 scales from a single stereo pair to a full discreet cinema: pairs at the front, additional units as centre, surround or height channels, all sharing the same voicing. Full specifications are listed in the Additional Information section.
