Focal 100IW6 – 2-Way In-Wall Loudspeaker with Polyglass Woofer

The Focal 100 IW6 is a two-way in-wall loudspeaker from Focal’s 100 Series custom integration range, made in the hi-fi tradition the French brand applies to its cabinet speakers. A 6.5-inch Polyglass cone mid-bass driver works with a 1-inch aluminium inverted dome tweeter, and the whole assembly disappears into the wall behind a slim magnetic grille. It suits small to medium rooms as a stereo pair, as distributed audio through a home, or as part of a home cinema layout.

Focal builds in two adjustments rarely found at this level: the tweeter tilts up to 20 degrees to aim high frequencies at the listening area, and separate switches trim the treble and midrange so the installer can balance the speaker to the room after fitting.

Key features

• Two-way in-wall design with a compact unibody frame for a shallow mounting depth
• 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) Polyglass cone mid-bass driver for articulate midrange and controlled bass
• 1-inch (25 mm) aluminium inverted dome tweeter with wide, even dispersion
• Tweeter tilts up to 20 degrees in any direction to direct sound towards the seats
• Treble adjustment switch (-3 dB, 0 dB, +3 dB) and midrange switch (-2 dB, 0 dB, +2 dB) for room tuning
• Frequency response of 60 Hz to 23 kHz (+/-3 dB), extending to 48 Hz at -6 dB
• 89 dB sensitivity with an 8-ohm nominal impedance, easy to drive with 25 to 120 W amplifiers
• Magnetic metal-mesh grille that can be painted to match the wall
• Six integrated mounting brackets with optimised grips for a secure fit
• Suitable for humid rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms

Design and installation

The IW6 needs a cutout of 273 x 170 mm and only 88 mm of depth from the wall surface, so it fits standard stud and partition walls. Six integrated mounting arms swing out and lock against the back of the board as their screws are tightened, and the screws stay captive so nothing drops inside the wall cavity. Two spring-post terminals accept the speaker cable. Once fitted, the low-profile magnetic grille sits almost flush and can be painted with the wall colour.

Sound performance

Polyglass applies glass microballs to a paper cone, stiffening it without adding much mass, which keeps the midrange clean and the bass tight. The inverted dome tweeter is a Focal signature: the small aluminium dome disperses high frequencies broadly, so listeners off to the side still hear balanced treble. A response reaching 60 Hz gives the IW6 useful body on music without a subwoofer in smaller rooms, and the level switches let you lift or tame the presence region once furnishings and wall materials have their say.

System matching and use

With 89 dB sensitivity and an amplifier recommendation of 25 to 120 watts, the IW6 pairs with most AV receivers and stereo amplifiers without strain. Use a pair for stereo in a bedroom or living room, add matching 100 Series models for surround channels, or run several through hallways and kitchens as a distributed system. Its tolerance of humid environments extends that plan into bathrooms where ordinary in-wall speakers would be a risk.

For homes that want real Focal sound without floor-standing cabinets, the 100 IW6 is the discreet route: fitted once, painted in, and tuned to the room from its own switches.
