The Polk Audio RC85i is the largest model in the RCi architectural series, a two-way in-wall speaker supplied as a matched pair and built around an 8-inch Dynamic Balance woofer. That bigger cone is the point of the design: it moves more air than the smaller RCi models, so the speaker plays deeper and louder from inside a standard wall cavity while the room itself stays completely free of cabinets, stands and trailing cables. A 1-inch soft dome tweeter in a swivel mount handles the treble, and because it can be aimed after installation, high frequencies can be steered towards the main seats instead of firing straight out from the wall.

Polk developed the RCi range for rooms where a conventional speaker system would dominate the space. The RC85i pair can form the left and right channels of a stealth home theatre, flank a television in a living room, or carry a stereo music zone in a bedroom, study or open-plan kitchen. The white matte grille is paintable, so once the wall is decorated the speakers read as little more than two neat rectangles in the plaster.

Driver design and Dynamic Balance

Dynamic Balance is Polk’s method of analysing driver materials with laser imaging and tuning out the resonances that colour the sound of a cone. On the RC85i the woofer cone is mineral-filled polypropylene, a light and stiff composite that keeps midrange detail clean while the rubber surround allows the long cone travel needed for bass weight. The wall cavity itself becomes the enclosure, so the driver’s controlled behaviour matters more than cabinet tuning. The 1-inch soft dome tweeter sits in a swivel mount, a practical detail in wall speakers because the mounting position is fixed by studs and furniture long before anyone sits down to listen; aiming the dome recovers the treble clarity that an off-axis seat would otherwise lose.

Sound character

With a rated response extending to 30 Hz and 90 dB efficiency, the RC85i is voiced for rooms that want scale without a subwoofer doing all the work, although pairing the pair with a subwoofer still extends a theatre system in the usual way. Recommended amplifier power is 20 to 100 watts per channel into 8-ohm-compatible amplification, which covers the majority of AV receivers and stereo amplifiers. In practice the speaker suits dialogue-heavy television, film soundtracks and full-range music at everyday and spirited listening levels.

Installation notes

Each speaker needs a rectangular cutout of 22.1 x 32.4 cm, and the mounting depth with 12.7 mm drywall is 8.26 cm, so a standard stud wall has room to spare. Check the chosen bay for pipes, cables and noggins with a stud finder before cutting, keep the pair at equal height, and place them 1.8 m or higher or with the tweeter low and aimed at ear level when the layout forces a high position. Stainless hardware and a powder-coated aluminium grille support long service in humid rooms, provided water is never allowed to pool on the cone or dome.

Where the RC85i works best

The natural homes for this pair are living-room theatres that must stay invisible, media walls built around a large television, and larger music zones where a 6.5-inch in-wall speaker would sound thin. They also serve well as front speakers matched with smaller RCi models as surrounds in an all-Polk architectural system.
