Paradigm H65-IW In-Wall Speaker

The Paradigm CI Home H65-IW is a two-way in-wall speaker for music and home theatre installations where the speakers should disappear into the room. It combines a 6.5-inch mineral-filled polypropylene mid-bass cone with a 3/4-inch tweeter fitted with Paradigm’s Perforated Phase-Aligning (PPA) lens, behind a bezel-free, magnetically attached grille that can be painted to match the wall. It is sold as a single passive speaker and suits front, surround and multi-room positions.

Tweeter technology

The high-frequency driver is protected by Paradigm’s Perforated Phase-Aligning lens, which sits in front of the dome and acts as a phase plug. By blocking out-of-phase frequencies, the lens produces smoother, more extended high frequencies with greater detail and output, while also shielding the delicate dome from damage and debris during and after installation. The tweeter is ferro-fluid damped and cooled, which keeps its performance consistent at higher levels. Off-axis response is rated at ±2 dB from 70 Hz to 18 kHz at 30 degrees, so listeners away from the centre seat still hear a balanced sound, an important quality for speakers that cannot be angled after fitting.

Mid-bass performance

The 6.5-inch cone is moulded from mineral-filled polypropylene, a formulation that adds stiffness and damping to control cone breakup, and it uses an oversized, computer-optimised ferrite magnet and high-power motor structure for clean midrange and extended bass from an in-wall format. Low-frequency extension is 55 Hz, so the H65-IW carries music convincingly on its own and crosses over comfortably to a subwoofer in a theatre system. The crossover is a 2nd-order electro-acoustic design at 2.5 kHz, and maximum input power is 60 W with a suitable amplifier range of 15 to 90 W into its 8 ohm compatible load.

Installation

The ABS chassis uses rigid clamps that simplify fitting and reduce installation time, with pocketed screw holes that help hold a drill steady. The cut-out required is 257 x 180 mm and the minimum mounting depth is only 70 mm, within a standard stud wall. Overall dimensions including the grille are 283 x 206 x 87 mm and each speaker weighs 1.6 kg. Easy-access binding posts have a larger wire opening and accept banana plugs, pins or bare wire. Note that the speaker is an open-back in-wall design with no built-in back box; an optional PB-7X10N back box is available separately where the installation requires one.

Where it fits

With 89 dB sensitivity in-room, the H65-IW works happily with ordinary AV receivers and multi-zone amplifiers. Pairs serve as discreet stereo speakers in living rooms and bedrooms, singles or multiples cover surround and rear channels in a home theatre, and the paintable, bezel-free finish lets a whole-house system run from room to room with a consistent, near-invisible appearance alongside other CI Home, CI Pro and CI Elite models.
