Description

TEAC W-1200 Double Cassette Deck

The TEAC W-1200 is a double cassette deck built to a traditional hi-fi component pattern at a time when few manufacturers still make one. Both of its two independent cassette mechanisms can record and play, which enables tape-to-tape dubbing, parallel recording onto two tapes at once and continuous playback across both wells. A USB digital output on the rear panel converts tapes to a computer at up to 48kHz and 16-bit PCM quality for archiving, and a microphone input with mixing supports karaoke and announcements. It connects to an amplifier or receiver through standard RCA line connections, includes a remote control, and occupies a full-width 435mm chassis. For anyone with a shelf of cassettes — family recordings, live tapes, mixtapes and commercial releases that never reached streaming — the W-1200 is both a playback deck and a preservation tool.

Key features

  • Two independent record and play decks: Each mechanism has its own record/play and erase heads, so both wells record as well as play, with independent drive systems.
  • USB archiving output: A USB Type-B output with built-in analogue-to-digital conversion sends audio to a Windows PC or Mac at up to 48kHz, 16-bit, with selectable sampling rates and bit depths.
  • One-touch dubbing and parallel recording: Copy a tape to a blank tape at the touch of a button, or record the same source onto both decks simultaneously.
  • Pitch control: Playback pitch on TAPE1 can be adjusted by plus or minus 12 percent, useful for tapes recorded on machines that ran fast or slow and for musicians matching pitch.
  • Microphone input with mixing: A 6.3mm mic input with its own level control can be mixed with tape or source audio for karaoke and announcements.
  • Noise reduction on playback: A playback noise-reduction system equivalent to Dolby B suppresses tape hiss during playback.
  • Fluorescent display and counters: A high-contrast fluorescent display shows left and right peak level meters and independent four-digit digital tape counters for both decks.
  • Repeat and timer functions: Repeat playback up to 20 repetitions, A-B repeat, dual-mode record mute for spacing tracks, and timer record/play readiness with an external audio timer.

Archiving tapes to a computer

The USB output is the feature that most distinguishes the W-1200 from surviving vintage decks. Cassettes degrade with time and with every play, so transferring a collection to digital files is a preservation exercise as much as a convenience. The deck’s converter offers sampling frequencies from 8kHz up to 48kHz and 8 or 16-bit depth, selectable to suit the source: a spoken-word family recording does not need the same resolution as a well-recorded music tape. Recording software is required on the computer side, and levels should be monitored on the deck’s meters during transfer to avoid digital clipping, which cannot be undone afterwards.

Recording performance

The deck uses a four-track, two-channel stereo system running at the standard 4.8 cm per second tape speed. Frequency response is rated at 30Hz to 13kHz for normal Type I tape and 30Hz to 15kHz for chrome Type II tape, within plus or minus 4 dB, with a total signal-to-noise ratio of 59 dB A-weighted and wow and flutter of 0.25 percent weighted RMS. Playback also supports metal Type IV tapes, while recording is specified for Type I and Type II. Fast winding takes approximately 120 seconds for a C-60 tape. Line input and output levels are 0.28V and 0.46V nominal respectively, matching conventional hi-fi components, and a headphone output delivers 15mW into 32 ohms for private monitoring.

Living with the format

A new deck brings practical advantages over a forty-year-old one: belts, idlers and heads are unworn, and both mechanisms behave consistently, which matters when dubbing or archiving a whole collection. The remote control, dimmable display and standard rack width make it easy to integrate into an existing system, and power consumption is 22 watts. The chassis measures 435 x 145 x 285.8 mm.

The TEAC W-1200 treats cassette as a living format rather than a novelty: two full record-capable mechanisms, thoughtful recording features and a proper USB archiving path, in a component built for a hi-fi rack.
